Never had a problem before and have now read that the update may have changed my Fitbit so that the battery does not remain in charge. its fine when attached to the charger and I have restarted it but as soon as its off the charger it goes back to a very low charge from 100% - what do I do now?

When my Charge 5 started rapidly losing battery power, I restarted and recharged my device multiple times over several days. Eventually, my Charge 5 got "unstuck" and was back to lasting 6-7 days. Hopefully, you will have a similar positive experience.
If this doesn't fix your Charge 5, you should contact Fitbit support (<-- click link)

Upon checking your account, we saw that the device last synced on October 8, 2023 with 4% battery level.
to verify the actual length of your device's battery life, we advise you to fully charge your device today and sync it regularly (time to time) until the battery gets depleted so that we can monitor its battery voltage. Sometimes when you sync your device, the battery indicator on your Dashboard may show a low battery, but the battery may actually go on to last for a few more days without charging.
