Fitbit charge 5 goes dead when on a walk

When I go for a walk I start a walk on my FitBit Charge5 but when I get back the thing is completely dead and I have to plug it into the charger to get it back on again -- but the battery isn't low.

Since it is unfit for purpose I would like to return it for a refund.
