GPS drops out 95% of the time

My charge 5 is killing me. The GPS when connected to phone, drops out on 9 out of 10 hikes.
The last 15 hikes I have only seen the full data collected for two. 
Does anyone else have this issue? I see the connection as active for the whole hike on both Charge 5 and phone in all cases. 

Interestingly the 2 correct hikes were in very remote areas where you WOULD expect an issue!

Should I just kill the connect to phone ad use the Charge 5 GPS? Any way to do this?

Built in GPS is terrible as well. Has never been accurate.
