Has anyone with a charge 5 taken the most recent update and it did NOT brick their device?

I recently bought a Charge 5 and am getting nagged for the most recent update, which has apparently wreaked havoc with a lot of people's devices. If I do the update and it bricks my device, I'm still under warranty so it'll just be a matter of dealing with getting a replacement. However, I won't bother if it it's absolutely going to brick my device. Are there many people that haven't had their device bricked by the most recent update?

What does “Brick”mean? I’ve been having sleep tracking issues.

My C5 partially did the update yesterday and went to flickering a screen this morning, not taking charge and showing a red X!

I used the support chat function and was talked through a restart, three pushes on the button on the usb connector which sorted it.

Now working as normal

I gathered it was a firmware update that had not completely set up hence the crash

My Charge 5 is linked to an Android phone and did NOT brick, whereas,  my partner's charge 5 linked  with an iPhone 14 totally bricked. Fitbit support was no help and  kept telling me my partner's Fitbit is syncing and offered no other help.  When put on the charger my partner's Charge 5 just continuously flashes the Fitbit logo.

Hello & welcome @vincent721

Which firmware version do you currently have? If you need it, here's how to check is:

  • From the Today page in the Fitbit app, tap on your picture/icon in the upper left to open the Account page
  • Tap on the Charge 5 tile
  • At the top of the page, you will see the Firmware version listed

My charge 5 had worked flawlessly during the 5 months that I've owned it...until about a week ago when it "bricked" itself halfway through my morning run.  I later tried to reset it with the charge cable and it just displayed the red circle with white "X" indicating "No Mas".  I left it charging with the cable since and pulled out my Fitbit Blaze that I've had for years and the Blaze synced up immediately, so at least I didn't loose too much data.  I reached out to Customer Support who had me to go through a series of rebooting options, but the "X" remained.  I gave it a couple of extra days, but eventually decided to reach out to CS about a way forward.  They offered to replace it or give me a discount on another unit and I selected the replacement.  Fast forward a couple of days since that call and when I went to disconnect it from the charge cable to pack it up, it immediately reset and appears to be working normal now.  I will still return it though as I think it's no longer dependable...at least not for me.

Brick means turned into a nonfunctional brick/stone/rock. An extremely bad outcome.

If you believe FBit, this has only effected a few. but if you look at these posts and articles in Tech media, it's hundred and maybe thousand of people many of whom who don't go to the forum and report. So we really have no idea. I've tried all the "fixes" and as amLB discovered relief at some reset turns to  frustration when our back staring at a brick. CS was no help and gave me the same non- answers everyone is getting. I'm trying one last ditch before I wrap this sucker up with a real brick and mail it to headquarters. I've been with fitbit since it started. Very wrong to dismiss my brand loyalty and money on an 8 mo old purchase. SOO.. anger aside I'm trying this. I removed the device from my app and then reset the device back to factory settings. Not JUST a reset rather like you were giving away the device. The factory reset gets rid of all your data BUUUTTT it sets the firmware back to the original 188.58 NOT the most recent update 194. which created all the trouble. The problem with that is there is no way to turn off updates. So I'm holding my breath to see if they will auto update. They seem to happen overnight so I'm thinking I'll take it offline overnight since I don't use it for sleep anyway. Fingers crossed
