How to register motion with stationary hands

At the gym, if you use a treadmill and have to hold onto the bar because of balance problems or you use an elliptical machine with a stationary bar to hold, how do you get your Charge 5 to register the exercise? I used to clip my Flex 2 onto the top of my sock, though with the Cybex Arc trainer the motion was too smooth to register then either.

The same issue applies at the supermarket!

Hi @SunsetRunner - When I use my recumbent exercise machines or those that keep my hand stationary, I slip my Charge 5 around my ankle, inside my sock. It seems to track steps nicely but a word of warning - when off the wrist like this  your heart rate info will be skewed.

I figured this would be the best case scenario for using it. The old ankle method. I'm not too concerned about heart rate as much as step count. Though I may experiment and see what it does with only heart rate data if I input exercise at a particular time frame.
