I'm thinking about upgrading my charge 4 but I know a lot of folks have had a hard time with the charge 5. I'm also kind of thinking about just straight up getting a smart watch. So should I get the charge 5 or just upgrade to something bigger and better?

I wouldn’t. My charge 5 crapped out. Many are having same issue.

Hello & welcome @balor98
What to get will depend on the features that you want/need in your wearable and your price range.
If you mainly use health tracker functions, then a Charge 5 would be fine. Just be aware there are some features that the Charge 5 doesn't have, such as music controls & floor tracking. The Charge 5 has a different wristband attachment, so it's not compatible with Charge 4 wristbands. The charger is different. I believe the Charge 4 has a physical button whereas the Charge 5 does not.
If you have questions about if the Charge 5 has a specific feature you're wanting, now is the time to ask.
Also, something to keep in mind. According to several tech sites I follow, rumor mill thinks that Fitbit could be releasing the Charge 6 sometime this year. If you can hold out for awhile, it might be worth waiting to see if there's an official announcement for the Charge 6 release in the next month or so.
Let us know what features are must haves for you and we'll do our best to make recommendations.

I wouldn't.
But read through the various topics and decide if this is a company you want to continue to do business with. As for me, given that I can only get the advanced data 2 or 3 days a week (and yes, moderator, I've tried ALL of the supposed fixes...), I won't be buying a Fitbit when it comes time to replace it...
