When you initially setup your new Charge 5, will the Charge 4 steps etc be transferred for the day or should I only change the affiliated tracker at midnight so as to not lose daily data

As long as you sync the Charge 4 before switching to the Charge 5, all the data on the 4 will be on the 5.

I agree. Make sure your Charge 4 has synced with your Fit Bit account on line. Then swap out your tracker. I don't recall whether your steps from the 4 will show up on your replacement tracker, but the accumulated will show up in your totals for the day.
Worse case is that you lose a day and though you no longer have a physical/virtual log, you know what you did personally.

If you sync the Charge 4 first before switching over, all your steps and stats will transfer to the Charge 5 once you finish the setup process.

If you simply add the Charge 5 to your account.
The app will sync the Charge 4 before it is moved.
As for your steps, these are kept on the cloud, not your tracker or phone.

Are floors climbed still recorded? I read the Charge 5 worked differently but it was unclear how floors climbed was measured.

@rc211e The Charge 5 does not track floors
