Is the Charge 5 heart rate monitor different than the Charge 4? Getting no reading with tattoos.

I've had Charge 4 for about 2 years and I've been pretty happy with it. I decided to upgrade to the Charge 5 and was pretty excited. But the heart rate monitor hasn't registered a single reading. I'm guessing its from tattoos. But the Charge 4 always worked--the LED monitor looks like its in the same spot on both. Why would one work with tattoos but not the other?
