Rule of thumb for tightness

After wearing the Charge 5 for a couple of days, I noted indentations on my skin when I took it off. I have relaxed the band by one pip so that now I can easily stick a finger between the strap and my wrist and the fit feels nicer but its no longer snug to the skin and I frequently see the sensor light flicker on my wrist, in the gap.

Should the Charge be on the loosest fit that's skin tight, or is a little looser fit fine?

@Moonkey I found I had to experiment a bit, but here is my two cents worth. If the band is tight enough to leave an indentation afterward, then that is too tight. I am surprised that loosening by one notch made it that much looser. If you can easily put your finger underneath, and frequently see the sensor, then that would be too loose. Are you sure there isn't a band setting between those two?

It's probably because I wore the Charge on the inside of the wrist, so that the difference between one pip and the next allows just enough space to insert a finger comfortably. Having moved the watch to the outside of the wrist, which is more convex, the fit is more tight.

That said, looking at the data over a week, and comparing results before and after adjusting the tightness, it looks like just enough space to fit a finger is right enough for the sensor.
