The smart wake doesn't work on my charge 5. It just wakes me up 30 minutes before the scheduled time regardless of whether I am asleep or not. By comparison, it worked well on my Charge 4, so I don't think it is my restless sleep habits.

Hi there, @dz1234. Thanks for stopping by in the Fitbit Community Forums and sharing the details about the issue with your Charge 5.
When you set an alarm on your Fitbit device, as you may know, smart Wake attempts to find the best time to wake you starting 30 minutes before the alarm time you set. If Smart Wake can’t find the best time to wake you, your alarm alerts you at the set time. For more information on how to set an alarm with Smart Wake, see How do I manage alarms on my Fitbit device?
If the Smart Wake feature is not working as described above, please remove your alarms and set them again and the check if they work as expected.

I am aware of how it is supposed to work. As I mentioned before, I used the feature with my Charge 4 and it worked well. I have set the alarm several times and every time I used the smart wake feature it has woken me up exactly 30 minutes ahead of the set time. It essentially functions as an alarm that is set 30 minutes ahead of schedule and there is no "smart" feature to it.
