These devices shut down in full sun

My charge 5 just died because I wore it in the pool in full sunlight for less than an hour. Now it won't hold a charge, sync or stay on. Luckily, it's under warranty and I'm getting a replacement. I guess that's lucky, considering I bought this charge 5 last year when my old charge 4 broke the exact same way. I just thought that the charge 4 was old and on its last legs anyway, but apparently this is a known issue.

Which begs the question, how does anyone use these who regularly exercises in full sunlight? And if they're so fragile in water, why are they being marketed as a way to track swimming? It's really dishonest. Less than an hour in full sun and now it's a brick. I'm glad I'm being sent a new one because it's what is owed to me as a customer, but I won't be buying another Fitbit product in the future.

I’ve just come on the forum for exactly this issue on my charge 5. About 45 mins in the sun and in and out of shallow water and it’s completely died. Nothing on the screen and if I use the app to sync no error msg comes up but it’s not actually syncing.
very bad when it’s marketed as a sport device and there’s a swimming ootion for tracking. I’ve tried to attach it to the charger to see if that kicks in but nothing still dead.
I too will be asking for a replacement. Such a pity, this was a great device.

We had the same experience!! I had no idea about the sun.  I’ve been in the pool and the ocean with no issues. Today I was in direct sun for about 40 minutes- after jumping in the pool for about 5 min - it kept vibrating on my wrist and the clock face wouldn’t show- it synced to my phone and I saw the battery was low which didn’t make sense as I was at about 75% in the morning.

Hi the problems of leaving a watch in direct sunlight [off wrist] is it can overheat and the seals can become fragile. When immersed in water it can get in ruining the device.
