How can I have Charge 5 track total sleep during a 24 hour period that includes both sleep at night and a nap during the day?

With one exception, it should be doing that now.  But note that sleep is always credited to the day you wake up, so it might be credited to the same 24 hours you were expecting.

The one exception I noted is that sleep for less than one hour is not detected.  I have found a work-around for that, though not officially recommended by Fitbit.  If you use the 'Begin Sleep Now' button (sleep tile > + sign near top right), then I'm Awake (or some such) after waking, Fitbit will include sleep time for shorter naps.  Note 'Begin Sleep Now' is not recommended for regular sleep as it prevents sleep stage detection (which you won't get with less than 3 hours sleep anyway).  I think that 'Begin Sleep Now' was originally there for models without heart rate detection.

P.S. On sleep tile, scroll top of screen right.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
