Can't log in to Fitbit app on my Android phone

I just bought a Charge 6. It is my first Fitbit, so I never had a Fitbit account. I followed the instructions to download the app, update the Charge 6, and the Charge 6 seems to work.

I can open the Fitbit app on my phone, but I cannot log in. The login page serves the same ads over and over, and any effort to get out of this loop returns me to "Login with Fitbit account". I tap that and tap "Continue with Google", etc., and it eventually displays my stored credentials, but will not let me sign in.

(BTW, IIRC the hype for the Fitbit said I could sign in biometrically [with my fingerprint?]. How do I turn that on?)
