I recently got a charge 6 but I can't figure out how to change the exercise settings so that I can see my distance in km
instead of the current time, like I had on my charge 5.

Yeah, there's no way to do that.
I put in a Feature request for customizing the top-of-screen metric: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Product-Feedback/Allow-users-to-choose-top-of-screen-metric-for-Exer...

You need to tap screen to switch to next metric. Top and bottom metrics are not customizable. Some time ago, top metric was showing distance but Fitbit released update and now it shows time of day. So you need to use middle metric to see the distance.

That is super inconvenient when you are running to have to scroll through between your pace and your distance. Is there no way to shut off the clock at the top?? I just got the Charge 6 as well primarily for run tracking and that one absent feature is leading me to return the watch.
