I bought the fitbit charge 6 specifically to track heat rate and calories during exercise. It’s fine at rest or sleeping but walking gave a HR of 140. I tried the suggestion of tightening the strap and also had a garmin hr monitor on to compare. Unsurprisingly the garmin gave a max heart rate of 95 on the same walk and both match resting HR of 60.
Moderator edit: clarified subject.

Early into the walk, i tightened the strap - you can see the HR drop but goes straight back up as soon as I start walking. After that, it remained high

I have exactly the same wrong HR readings when I am walking.
The fitbit support is in m case not helpful at all and answers more or less nonsense to my emails.

Tracking heart rate while walking is completely unreliable on charge 6. And it's ridiculous to have to remember to tighten the strap to get a situation where it may or may not work.
I also used the charge 6 to track my walking on the Camino Frances this fall, and encountered several issues with erroneous data. Seems to me it was due to buffer overrun or similar on the watch itself. A watch restart fixed it
This is more a toy than a serious product in my opinion.

Welcome to the forums @Mijoed @GregDK.
Good to see you participating @agnosie.
Thank you for taking the time to share all these details regarding the difficulties with Charge 6. Sorry to know the inconveniences.
I'd recommend you try restarting the device again using the three pulse restart method mentioned here below, instead of the restart option found on the Charge 6 itself:
In addition, please follow the instructions in this article to improve the accuracy of heart rate information and check the information mentioned here about other factors that could affect your heart rate reading, this has been useful to other users who have experienced something similar.
