My son has been so excited about the arrival of his Charge 6 which he bought with his own money. The first went missing in the post so he waited another 2 days and now it won't work as the fitbit app will only let him add a child's watch. He is 13 so past coppa but still a child so unsurprisingly he and I want family link. Anyone know a solution pls

Hello @KJC12345 and welcome to the Community. Your Google Family Link is the issue. A user must have their own unsupervised Google account to set up an individual device account.

Thanks this is what I'm finding. It's so ridiculous as Fitbit don't make devices that suit teens so you have to choose between overseeing your child or buying them another watch

This decision was in response to COPPA many of the EU contries have a similar regulation.

@KJC12345 I can't confirm the following information. I think a parent used the following workaround. They removed their child from the Family Link account. They set up their child's device on an unsupervised account. After a few days, they re-enabled the Family Link. Like I wrote, I'm not sure this will work. My grandchildren are too young for a Fitbit of any type.

What age is your son registered with fitbit as

For my situation. Registered as a 13 year old with a parental supervised google account. Discovered the same problem that OP had. I followed instructions to remove supervision and removed them from family group. That didn't work, still can only add child watches.
tried restarting phone and reinstalling fitbit app
I have not tried deleting their fitbit google account data because the warning says that I cannot rejoin fitbit with that account for 30 days 😕

update... just had to wait a few hours for the unsupervised account change to cycle through the system. Took maybe 5+ hours from the time google account was changed to the time fitbit account recognized and allowed upgrade to adult account.

I am having the same issue. Were you able to add your 13 year old back to family link and supervision without issue, and without issue to the fitbit account?
My 13 year old is turning 14 in less than a year, so we bought her a Charge 6 for Christmas. This a disappointing hangup for her to not be able to use her new device.

Hello @melodiouskies
You might find this thread on the same topic (<-- click link) helpful. Hopefully, you'll be able to set up the Charge 6 for your 13 yo daughter.

I can remember the process being very painful but I did remove and then successfully add my son back to family link

Following - same thing here, bought a charge 6 for son who turned 14 in December, and fitbit only wants to find a kid watch. Will try making him unsupervised just to pair, but really want him in Family link!
