Fitbit App "Typical Range For People Like You Benchmark"

Just wondering whether the "typical range for people like you" in the Fitbit Sleep Benchmark refers to the % or time?

Ie If you sleep 8 hours and get 2 hours of REM (I wish) does the typical range refer to the 25% or 2 hours?

Hello @James1000

What a great question.

Based on the source referenced on this help page (<-- click), I would say that the benchmark is based on percentage, not time.

@James1000   You mentioned the percentage and time in your post.  Those numbers you see are data for that sleep record.

  • The percentage is the breakdown in the different stages for that record.  It will always add up to 100%.
  • The time is the time you spent in each stage for that record.  Let's say your sleep record is from 10 PM to 7 AM.  Add up all the times and it will add up to 9 hours, maybe plus or minus a minute for rounding.

I hope this isn't too mind bending, but 2 hours of REM (lucky us) could be 25% one day and 22% on a different day.  It can do this if you total sleep time is different on this two days.

The solid bars are your data and the lighter, hashed bars are the range for someone like you.  Data is by sex and commonly a 10 year age range.  If you look really closely, those lighter bars are in the same place every day.  But your bars are in a different place from mine.  My husband's bars are in a different place from mine.
