New Charge 6 not recording sleep

ANSWERED

Very disappointed so far.  I've had a number of Fitbit Charges over the years, got the 6 with high hopes.  I've been wearing it 24 * 7 for two weeks.  I have only slept one night and have not walked up a single staircase.

I've tried everything without success.  Only thing it does is count my steps and give me my heartbeat.

Can't get it to re-start, says no updates available.

Any help would be appreciated.

I am a restless sleeper I read somewhere I have to be still for 10 minutes for it to think I'm asleep, that will NEVER

happen.

I discovered that if I open the app when I am going to bed I can manually start the sleep timer.  There is a big Plus sign on the main tile page.  It’s worked the last two nights!

Hello @Garmain

This help page (<-- click) has the 3 ways to restart your Charge 6.

Is the main issue you're having the lack of sleep tracking? Would you please share with us what troubleshooting you've tried so far?

BTW, you have to be still for an hour for your Fitbit to start tracking sleep, not 10 minutes.

Hi @Garmain. Welcome back to the forums.

Thank you for sharing the inquiry regarding this situation with your Charge 6.

As indicated by @RiekoC, when your body is completely at rest and you haven’t moved for about an hour, your device records that you’re asleep.

Make sure your device is positioned higher on your wrist, about 2-3 finger widths above the wrist bone. The band should feel secure but not too tight. For detailed instructions, check out How do I wear my Fitbit device?

To you know more information, take a look at the following help article: How do I track my sleep with my Fitbit device?

Thanks for your help @RiekoC @Gondwana

Thanks I’m a very restless sleeper. I doubt I’m ever in the same position
for a hour. How about why it never records me walking up stairs. I live
in a three story home and must do 20 flights a day. Thanks I’ll keep
trying.

Hello @Garmain

The Charge 6 (and Charge 5) doesn't have an altimeter, which is need to track floors. That's why you're not seeing floors being tracked.

Thanks the app shows stairs climbed so I naturally assumed…. At least it’s
not broken.

Hello @Garmain

The Fitbit app has floors climbed tile because there are a few Fitbit devices that still track floors. It's also there for users who had a Fitbit device in the past that tracked floors for their historical data.

Hello @Garmain

Wonderful! That sounds like a good alternative for you, especially since you're a restless sleeper.

Thanks for the tip. I'll recommend this to other restless sleeper users.

I am so happy I can now track my sleep.  I never spend an hour in one position, unfortunately.  Thanks for your help.

Hi @Garmain

That's wonderful news.

Thanks for sharing your screenshot. Even though you're getting the basic sleep graph because you have to manually start & stop your sleep session, you're getting sleep tracking! Yay!

The sleep and performance records stopped working about three weeks ago and I'm disappointed that Fitbit isn't working with us to fix the problem.  Charge 6 was my third Fitbit. I've reset, reinstalled and followed the community suggestions. Super disappointed.

Before you go to bed you can force it to record your sleep. Open the APP
and touch the plus button. Then a paper opens and tape start sleep. When
you get up open app and tap stop sleep. It’s the only work around for us
restless sleepers. Someday maybe they’ll fix the algorithm.

Me too. Waste of time. Won’t be getting another fitbit when this one dies.

Tried that but then in automatically adds in the few hours it has recorded so i get a ridiculous time asleep, breakdown and score.

Hello @Deirdre784

I got confirmation that the team is aware of the issue with editing sleep logs and is working on fixing the problem. However, we don't know the timeline for the fix yet.

I'll report back when I have any updates.

Hey @Deirdre784

Another user shared today (25 Oct 2025) that Support told them that there's an app update that is starting to roll out. Support indicated that the update should fix the issue with editing sleep logs.

Keep checking your app store and install the update when it's available to you. Then, let us know if you're still experiencing the sleep log editing bug.

Update has appeared so downloaded. In the UK we have returned from British summer time so had an extra hour’s sleep and not sure how Fitbit coped either that. Will give it a few days to settle down. No hourly heart rate data coming through now though, only current 🤔
