When my child goes out to play in the neighborhood he'll often hang out somewhat close to my house. Calling him when he's out in the neighborhood near my house has been unreliable. Sometimes the calls fail to connect, or other times they connect but with poor quality/breaking up/dropping the audio stream. My theory is that his watch is close enough to my house to pick up a Wi-Fi signal so the watch chooses to use that over LRE but the wifi signal is too weak. Is there a way to disable WiFi for calling? I am aware that wifi can be turned off entirely but it's several layers deep within the settings and it's not clear to me if the watch will continue to receive software updates if it is not connected to WiFi. Is it possible to leave WiFi off completely? What are the downsides of doing so?

Hello and welcome to the community,
Unfortunately, there isn't an option to disable Wi-Fi just for calling. You have to either disable it fully or keep it on. I have passed this feedback to the product team and they are looking into it. It would be interesting to choose which functions would use Wi-Fi or not.
