Friend to friend texting

I'd like to add my ten year old son's friend as a contact so they can use their watches to text each other.  Why is this not possible?!?!?!

The Ace LTE doesn't currently support texting between friends; see this help page (<-- click). 

There's a feature request (<-- click) in the Product Feedback forum to allow messaging between approved friends. You can add your vote and comments to this request.

This is going to be a deal breaker for parents of older elementary and middle school kids. This is P0 feature that should be on the roadmap.

Then the way to make your voice heard is by voting for the idea, as posted by @RiekoC .  That's where the Fitbit developers get inspiration for future features on their devices.
