My screen remains black when I view it unless I tap the face many times.

@Gracecface A warm welcome to the Community! Thank you for your message. 

On most of our newer devices, you'll need to go to the quick settings (mostly by swiping down on the clock face) .
Make sure that Screen Wake is on. 
 To change the setting just tap on it.
