A guess how the Force would calculate snowboard steps ?

Hi all:)

I'm 37, 5'4 and about 128 lbs. I have been a regular gym goer for years...but have also started full time University again.... routine and schedule took a hit, along with my fitness:( Hopefully back on track now and will be able to lean out and put on some lean muscle mass.

We snowboard.... I've taken it with me once so far...it does calculate it, but I was just wondering if anyone had an educated guess on what motion it's sensing? When I'm cutting? Heel to toe?

I'm excited to have the motivation and the addition of a treadmill at home,  so I can keep my steps in and lean out, and gym for the weights.  I've been able to keep it about 7- 10 000 steps so far.

It counts impacts. If you do knee bends it won't count any steps. If you step in place it will count steps if your feet hit the ground hard enough. So mostly it's going to walking back up the hill or to the lift. A washboard would likely register quite a few steps. Crossing a track might register a step. Anytime you feel an impact, whether it seems significant or not, may register as a step.

Fitbit trackers are essentially pedometers, ie.devices designed to count steps. Ask yourself this question: what is a step when you're snowboarding? Your Fitbit will detect activity as you move your hands, but chances are it will underestimate calories burned. You would probably get more accurate calories with a heart rate monitor.

Anyone have suggestions how to track a day on the mountain Snowboarding? I'm heading up to Whistler, B.C. this weekend and this will be the first time with my Fitbit. I know it's a crazy calorie burner and curious how I should track the activity given that there isn't a Skiing/Snowboarding exercise formally as a tracked exercise. I'm considering tracking with the generic "Workout" but was also curious if I just did nothing if the Fitbit would let me categorize the activity later?

ive found "Bike" to give the most relevant info when snowboarding (actually in Whistler at the moment).  its a bit 'dumb' in that it tracks the lifts as well.  You will also have to use the PC app to be able to look at the data in any useful way. The Android app is just frustrating.
