Anything Goes August Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

Jaunty July is coming to an end and it is time to start a new step challenge.  @Jotex suggested calling this one Anything Goes August as in the great Cole Porter song

Anything Goes?  Like July it’s hot in the Northern hemisphere, but this month we also begin to lament the end of summer and rush to cram in vacations and finish summer projects we should have started in June.  With all that it is easy to forget to take care of yourself so now is your chance to write down your step and a few other goals for the month.  Then you can report in every few days to keep yourself honest.  And in the spirit of Anything Goes, maybe add a few taps to your basic step goals.

General monthly instructions are below, but this month I’m adding a picture scavenger hunt:

Take your phone or other camera on your walks look for, snap, and post three pics or more of the following: 1 - some sort of Danger or Warning sign or image like “falling rocks” or “slippery when wet,” the odder the better; 2 - a posted map of something like a downtown walking map, or a park trail map; and 3 a movie or theatre marquee.  Just post here as you find them and add a line or internet link about what you are posting.   (Thanks @Ennay for the pic)

inspiration : tn-500_a1

How It Works:

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format.
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

@lavabelle You are right about the different climates and hemespheres. Right now I am over winter (thou it is actually one of my favourite times of the year). I much prefer it to being too hot!

@SunsetRunner it is nice to actually have another Australian in this thread! Although I also enjoy reading about what is going on in other places.

wow!  6 pages to read!

Got back late last night, ended up not wearing my fitbit most of the week since so much water was involved.  Not as active a trip as I would have liked, but I got a lot of reading in and maybe my PF feels a bit better.

Food was terrible.  As in not only was it not good for me, it  wasnt particularly good.  Definitely time to get back on the food wagon this month.

Managed to get 15,000 steps in before I had to start drinking some gosh awful tasting meds for the procedure tomorrow. It’s going to be a rough night I think. 😐

@Jotex,

When I drank that liquid, which strangely is called go-litely, I had a sip of black coffee with sugar after each swallow of the liquid. I normally don't use sugar in anything, so the horrible taste of the coffee killed the horrible taste of the liquid.

Look up the procedures for the liquid you are using and make sure you follow them. Otherwise, you could end up doing it again.

I am so sorry.  I just did that last Thursday/Friday.  Awful stuff.  Also, the version I had was two bottles -- one the evening before, and one the morning of.  The morning dose was so much harder since I knew what was coming.  Yuck.  Yuck. Yuck.  If processed food tasted like that we would all be skinny as twiggy.

I agree.  That stuff's foul.  I had two preps to do, almost a year ago now, and diluting it with apple juice did nothing really to improve the taste.  I had the scope at both ends though, and thankfully they found nothing except a hiatus hernia - although I had massive problems with reflux for a month or so after the endoscopy, even though I'd never suffered from it before (just occasional heartburn).

Sad day.  RIP Hawthorne.  He was our old guy.  Would have turned 16 in December.

Here he is about 7 years ago trotting around with his big ole tongue. 🙂

Yeah, I survived!!! After a horrible day and a half, the worst is behind me and I have 5 years until I have to repeat the procedure. All your comments and advice helped — thanks a lot!

@GershonSurge - my ‘solution’ was called Moviprep Orange. Nothing could have made that taste better; but mixing in advance and refrigerating it made it easier...

@WendyB - you’re so right — NASTY 😷 tasting!!!!

@Baltoscott - I also had to mix it twice and later take a laxative pill each time. I had been forewarned that the side effects included nausea. Good thing, too, and I needed it... 🤢

@CatLover74 - the nice (?) part if an endoscopy is there is no prep. The bad part is you are not knocked out and feel the pipe going down (gag...).

@SunsetRunner - I hope you get your energy back soon. Probably just a summer slump.

@Baltoscott - condolences on the passing of beautiful Hawthorne. 😥

@lavabelle - I admit winter is my least favorite season and summer was my fave. But this heat is really getting to me! Like you it zaps my energy.

Here are my goals for Anything Goes August.

15,000 steps a day

7 miles per day

30 floors per day

I am modifying this by adding 4 days off so as to not feel guilty when we have a "town" day & can't get the steps.

lots of yard work this week, plus our daily walks

August 3rd  steps 19,880, 44 floors, 9.18 miles

4th 19,587 steps, 35 floors, 8.89 miles

5th 21,359 steps, 14 floors!, 9.77 miles

6th 18,251 steps, 43 floors, 8.62 miles

One of my favorite flowers is blooming this week, Surprise Lilies, AKA "Naked Ladies". These are in my yard and I walk by them 30 times a day. Makes me smile.surprise lilies.jpg

@Jotexugh.  I am due again in October.  Last time I got to prep with just gatorade and Miralax, not the premix.  I could control the flavor better and when I got sick of sweet I mixed with plain water and followed up with chicken broth instead.

@BaltoscottSo sorry for your loss

I got in plenty yesterday by going early but overslept today.  By the time I get out there it is going to be insanely hot.  The earlier I get my steps the more I burn that day, I am definitely an afterburn gal.
Goals: Aug 6-31 - Average 15K steps, 2700 burn
Aug 6: 15924 (+924) , burn 2981 (+281)

Started a puzzle.  I haven't done a puzzle since i got my fitbit because puzzles were one of my obsession, sit too much, stay up too late things.  Decided to brave it. Yesterday I didn't start it until i had finished all my steps for the day so can I resist working on it today?
