April Showers (2020) — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

This fourth month of 2020 will bring more mud in my area — and more COVID-19.  Like there isn’t enough already!  But try not let it get in the way of your goals. Temperatures should be mild in both Northern and Southern hemispheres.  Get outside (if authorities allow and you are not sick) and experience life!  If you need to be inside it may be time to add some bodyweight exercises to your routine, some yoga, or something else new. 

 

Me, I’m going to try and learn to ride a unicycle this month!. And, of course, I will be washing my hands 10-15x/day, and maintaining 6 ft distance, and otherwise trying to “flatten the curve" in my community.                                             

   
How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

 

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

 

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

 

Suggested Posting Format    
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

 

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme of the photo scavenger hunt this month is changing seasons and the effect of COVID-19. It is the beginning of Spring in the North and Fall in the South.  So blossoms for some of us, falling leaves for others.  And since the pandemic is still raging, pics of how life and people around you are adapting to that new fact of life — including, if you are learning something new in your fitness life, your progression in that.  Hopefully I'll be able to share a pic of me actually on my new unicycle sometime this month!

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

 

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Step goal of 8k per day.         Since March 12 I've only had 2 days over 10k.

Yoga & light weights 3x a week.

 

These step counts are higher than I expected, on days the the weather is nice we walk to the mailbox and beyond but stay on the flat road. Can't go up the hills without getting short of breath.  If we are not walking outside I try and get 250 steps per hour all day.   I'm thankful I can do this much. Have kept up the weights & yoga but only use a 10# weight.

A picture of one of the native Red Cedar trees in full "bloom". Some trees set out "blossoms" while others release pollen, the pollen collects on the blossoms and after a few days they turn bright orange. Looks vaguely like a sea anemone.

Well, Easter wasn’t at all melancholy. It was also Jane’s birthday. We wound up with FOUR CAKES for the two of us (three shown below).  Jane decided she wanted a Zoom birthday so all our family watch her blow out her candles.  So she bought herself a cake.  But I had already gotten her one, and, on Sunday morning her brother dropped off another. Not so good for weight maintenance! (I’m up a pound this week, but at least the fourth cake was made flowers). The party went off well.  25 screens (and 40 or so people) trying to wish her well at the same time.  Fun chaos.

Kanga999, these are Eastern Red Cedar, the stuff Cedar chests are made of.
Very aromatic once cut and dried. Western red cedar does not have that
unique smell.
