August Wanderlust 2024 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

The end of summer or winter looms and there are only a few more weeks for a getaway or two before the seasons change. You still have to get your steps though, so make your plans with some travel in mind and post your monthly goals here.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

IMG_6275.jpeg

The theme this month is wanderlust ... the road, the trail, going somewhere, and what you see along the way.  A few years ago we focused on bridges and overpasses.  That would be good. So would anything from the Paris Olympics!  Post your goals below and post your pics throughout the month.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Here's a Wanderlust story about a bike. The first pic is my Rivendell Atlantis on the day I got it, September 9, 2004, at mile 0. The second pic is that bike today, nearly 20 years later, at mile 50,000. The last pic is a witness to mile 49,999. Of course, not all the bits are the same. I replaced the original front wheel at about 20K, and the original back wheel at about 26K. And I replaced the rims and spokes on that second set of wheels in 2020 and 2021. The brakes have been replaced (brake pads replaced at least once a year), the bottom bracket once, the pedals 3 or 4 times, the pedal cranks once, the fenders once, seat once, the generator lighting system twice, rear cassette 5x or more, middle chain ring on the crank 5x times or more, the chain 10x or so. Honestly, I think only the frame, fork, front stem, handlebars, and me are the only bits that traveled the full 50K. But 99% of the miles have been a joy. And even the super hot/wet/cold/dry days have been pretty good. Bikes are great!

Congratulations @Baltoscott on your almost-20-year, 50,000-mile journey with this  bike!! Are you going to celebrate with a new one, or go for 100,000 miles? Just curious.

Best Answer

Thanks @Jotex - I'll keep this bike forever, but I don't think I'll get it to 100K. Last year I bought a carbon-fiber Trek pedal-assist ebike. Even with the motor and battery, it weighs in a bit less than the Atlantis, and it is more fun in the hills. Since getting the Trek, and a separate more conventional ebike (i.e., heavy!) that my wife and I share about 5 years ago, the Atlantis is only getting about 30-50% of my total milage.

I am in Tasmania at the moment, for a dance competition tomorrow. Today I went walking and visited the Cataract Gorge. I caught the chair lift over the river (apparently the world's longest span chairlift) then walked back over the old suspension bridge built in 1904. I last walked over the bridge in in 1975! It looks exactly the same now.

Great pictures and stories, @NellyG and @Baltoscott!

I've written again to my new doctor, and asked whether it's possible for my condition to be classified as needing emergency treatment.  After the first hour or so of the day, it's already pretty bad, and the second half of it is something I wouldn't wish on anyone.  It's a relief to get to lie down at the end of the day, and I know then that the pain will slowly ease.  In all this, I'm grateful that it eases right off when I want to sleep, and stays that way overnight.

I've shown my window view before, but this was a gorgeous English summer early evening, with the sun in the west behind our house.  I want to be on that distant ridge again - one of the many places that Walter loved, because as well as being outside, there were some brilliant places for him to play at rollies with his tennis ball.

IMG_0204.jpeg

Here it is again a few minutes later - supper time!  (That's our home-made wine all ready to pour).

IMG_0205.jpeg

So what do I do all day when I can't get out after the first hour?  Well, walkers need socks, don't they, and socks can get a little tired looking.

Here's the toe of one that had seen better days.

IMG_0202.jpeg

I picked up a neat little mending loom a few years ago.  I've found it really useful for fixing socks, and I had got in a nice ball of blue angora wool from a local shop where I had previously bought some nice warm alpaca socks.  A bad sock can take a couple of hours or even more to fix, but it's work that is very satisfying.  Here's the same sock two days later.  The toe is next on the list.

My dance partner and I got our picture in the Launceston local paper the day after the dance competition. A bit of an honour! We were probably the oldest competitors there lol

Yesterday Peter and I visited the exhibit in our local gallery, once a castle. Although not at all large or particularly impressive as far as castles go, it is charming and is now used for hosting cultural events. Here is a quiet oasis on the grounds with an artistic water fountain.

Get referred to London hospital1/1

Progress!  I've written to my doctor about every three days, and she has listened.  My wife has also helped move things along, too.  I had been e-mailing my letters to the surgery, but learned that it can still take a couple of days for them to get to the doctor.  On the advice of a good friend, my wife or anther good friend takes the printed letter to the receptionist and looks them in the eye (gently) to say "please make sure this gets to Dr X for first thing, tomorrow morning".  'that does the trick.  Our receptionists are pretty good, and we know which one is the best.  She was there when my wife called with the letter, and asked whether I would like a phone call from the surgery.  She said yes, please, to that, and I was called by a doc about an hour later.  He didn't know about my case, but made a booking for my doc to call when she was in the next day.

That she did, and she even booked me in to see her later the same day, which was yesterday.  She had said on the phone that she was happy to refer me to London, but that as she had only seen me once, a tear ago, the referral would be stronger if she saw me in person.

So we wait with bated breath to see what the response from the hospital is.  it's a big step in the right direction, and I'm so glad that I've switched to this doctor.

@jantonini It's barely sewing, what I do, although I do have to go in and out with the needle at the end of each row.

@Jotex Great castle pictures - I love that fountain!  And well done for the dancing!!

Here's another pair of mended socks, trialling out the use of two threads, and done today for a dear friend of ours.
