I'm still in weight-loss mode, but starting to do some FitStar workouts for strength. I keep my step goal a little low so I've got the energy for FitStar on some days, and over-run my step goal on my cardio days. That seems to work pretty good, but I'm thinking about another approach.
I'm currently burning about 1000 calories over BMR every day. I'm considering making my primary goal calorie burn instead of steps, then doing whatever I need to hit that calorie burn goal each day. On strength days I'll do more FitStar, on cardio days I'll do more speed walking.
Has anybody tried that approach? How is it working out for you?

Me! I did it. When my buzzer goes off I look like a toddler on steroids hopping around. I am not in weight loss but that is still most important to me because gaining is not an option. I don't really care so much about steps unless I am in a challenge. And only because I hate losing.

Calorie burn is my main goal. Most of my workouts aren't step-based (cycling is my main burner), and with my desk job I rarely hit even my lowered step goal of 8,000 unless the family's out window-shopping at the mall or something (which will be a little more common in the next few months).

I don't stop for the day most days until I'm going to hit my calorie goal. As I've lost weight this means I naturally have to do more. However, I'm considering adding a piece of cardio equipment to my home gear, and it might be a rowing machine. It may not pick up steps, but I'm more interested in the raised heart rate.
