I'm not sure how to "word" this properly but; how many calories does a person have to burn to lose 1 pound?

For fat, as stated above.
But to add for some clarity since it sounds like inexperienced.
Do your diet and exercise extreme, and you will burn off muscle mass, which provides only 600 calories per lb when used as energy.
Much easier to lose a pound of muscle than a pound of fat.
Also - water fluctuations that are totally expected have no calories associated with it.
Start a diet, you flush out some water, your 4 lb loss in first week was not all fat, unless you really did eat 2000 calories less daily than you burned in total, each day that week.
Eat a high sodium meal, gain 2 lbs the next morning, you didn't eat 7000 calories over what you burned in one day.
Always do the math for big losses or gains to assure yourself so as not to freak out for expected water weight fluctuations .

You need to do strength training and cardio training. Some trainers recommend three days strength and two days cardio. With my gym's training program, I'm able to do 7 days with Isolated Muscle Group exercises. One full hour doing the Chest, Back, Legs, Shoulders, and Arms each day.
As I have a consistent scheduling, I do Strength in the AM and Cardio in the PM everyday as a repeated behavior pattern.

Calories and lost pounds is a hard call. More lean muscle will cause you to burn more calories. Type of exercise produces different results. After three months, exercising at least three times a day (30 to 40 minutes), I see different results than I did when I first started. I actually have to eat more to see more results in weight loss. Yesterday I was eating most of the day, good food items, but still eating much more than normal and I loss 1.4 pounds. Weight lifting can cause calorie burn much longer after the exercise is completed than basic aerobic. So I do some weight training every day. I read lots of articles on this, every one seems to have a different answer. Good luck figuring that one out.

This really depends on the person. I have a very low metabolism (genetics) so I have to burn more than the average person. ( I eat about 700 calories a day and walk 15,000 steps). Some people have to burn less to lose weight. I would start with the default settings and if that does not do it, increase your amount of steps and/or decrease your calories. You need to do what works for you.
