Car accident :(

ANSWERED

Hi all hope everyone is doing brilliant numbers of steps and really going for it! Sadly watching my numbers decline this week since I had a car accident on Thursday (an idiot didn't look, pulled out of a side road and slammed into my car).

I have massive bruising and swelling on both knees and shins, but luckily thanks to Mercedes-Benz safety features no broken bones and no cuts.  The paramedics thought both legs were broken but thankfully not.

So since Thursday evening I have barely done 4000 steps in total, and those are being done with crutches, slowly, painfully and haltingly 😞 miserable I can't be the active person I am.  I have usually run 5k and done 7000+ steps by 7am every day so this inability to walk even a few steps is driving me nuts.

However I will soon be back.  My bruises are changing colour daily and I feel better in myself which is great.

Keep going everyone! Be back with you all soon 🙂 x

I know what it is like to be held back from what your body and mind is used to do. It can get really frustrating and boring.

I myself had started to get back on track after many years of beeing stuck on the sofa or bed of illness and then I had to go through an emergency back-operation which set me back a long time since I could hardly walk for 3 months after and it would take me a minimum of 40 min to eat a half a slice of sandwich by my own machine 😉

But hang in there! You willl soon enough be back on your feet even though it might take a little time getting used to the needed adjustements. Keep a mental picture of yourself of where you want to be in the near future and what is needed to get there. Stick to it, allow the natural emotions during the process, accept them and keep moving forward.

You`ll get there!

As long as there is any fight left, don't ever give up! Keep in mind, this also means there has to be space for acceptance too.

Thank goodness you didn't have broken legs. Your being active prior to the accident must be in your favor, Alex.

For now, just concentrate on healing and feeling better. I hate bruising and soreness, but it's better than a cast on your legs.

Please be good to yourself and let us know how you're doing.

Thanks so much!  Yes I was very lucky to be honest.  I shall never buy any car other than Mercedes-Benz again, my car did me proud protecting me!

Yes bruises heal so should improve soon.  For now they are huge over my knees, the sides of my knees inside and all down my shins in big red/purple/yellow/green/black blotches.  Really ugly and agonising.  Yuck!  Better than the casts though I agree!  That would be awful.

I will be back and stepping before I know it I am sure.  Thanks for the support 🙂

Good thanks, almost back to normal.  Still getting really tired at the end of each day though - my body seems to be putting everything into healing.  Walking a lot better too.  Thanks!  Yes did loads of reading - great 🙂  How things with you?  Keep stepping!

@alex45674  Your body knows it needs healing, so listen to it. Then when it's ready, both of you can start listening to your FitBit again!

I just want winter to go away so I can get outside and not wear boots!

Agreed, yes taking it carefully.  Doctor has me walking a bit each day and I find it easier if I get up from the desk and walk a few paces every 15min or so to keep things moving.  I am not overdoing it though!  I have just been down to the repairers as I had left a bag I needed in the boot.  Bit tearful and upset now having seen the car's damage for the first time - yuck.  I love my car, emotionally attached to him and I miss him!  He looked after me 3 weeks ago bless him!  Still, rather him damaged than me!

Hope your weather improves!  Spring has really arrived here now, spring flowers everywhere, still a bit chilly but sunny and bright blue sky - gorgeous running weather for sure.  Grrrr!

Keep stepping, even in those boots 🙂

Thank you so much!  I am really improving in the last week or so, steps back to pre-accident 15K average numbers and even getting some (sort of slow!) running in!  My legs hurt today still and I still have lovely bruises 8 weeks after the accident but certainly much better!

Hope you are feeling much better too, so sorry to hear what you have had to go through.  We can all do this together, all us Fitbitters 🙂 keep stepping!

So good to read that you are doing progress! Isn`t it motiviating to see some results?

Bruises take a long time to heal but still, 8 weeks sems a little long XP

Keep up the good work, and like you wrote, we are all here in this together!

For me Fitbit flex has been a great tool for my recovery. Thank you, I am doin much better myself 😃 A long way to go still, but with fitbit and the community here it is definetly a lighter load to carry. With Fitbit I have managed to keep track on things and reach my goals one at a time. In some ways I am doing better than I`ve done in a few years while in others I still have a long way to go. But that is life!

When we keep fighting and motivate others it keeps us up and going the best we can and that is all that matters! Keep fighting 😃

Thank you so much emerson and tashapus!  I am feeling a lot better although not 100% yet.  Fitbit has really helped motivate me and seeing the numbers go up each day and week has really cheered me up!  The graphs show a definite and steady improvement in my activity levels and it is really good not only to be feeling stronger but see actual evidence that I am getting better!!  I love my Fitbit and all the Fitbitters 🙂 keep stepping everyone! xx

Goodness!! I am SO sorry about the car accident!! I myself have been in a couple doosies.....but the last one was a major one and cost me big bucks......and unfortunately my fault, but thankfully no one was hurt. I hope you are able to get back to it soon......good thoughts coming your way for a speedy recovery AND for minimal damage done to your car 😕

Best Answer

Hi Bear thank you!  I am loads better, and just limping a bit sometimes (at the end of the day usually!) now.  My car had £13,000 of damage but is all fixed now thanks, was very glad to get him back.  The other driver was at fault so his insurance company paid up!  As long as no-one gets hurt badly that is the main thing isn't it?!  I was in a lot of pain for a few weeks but no long term damage so I consider myself really lucky! xx

That was very lucky that you got the guy's insurance to pay up!! Sometimes they try to pull the wool over your eyes and do battle.......but dang!! That is a LOT of money!!

I am glad you weren't seriously hurt AND glad that you are making a fast recovery. Good for you for getting back into the swing of things with the whole fitbit stuff. That's totally bad@ss!!! 🙂

Thanks! The Policeman who came to the scene while I was being seen to by the Ambulance told him it was his fault and to just get on with it!  I am sure that helped.  He pulled out of a side road and hit me - I was on the main carriageway so he really had no chance 🙂

I am working hard, don't feel that well today but getting on with it!!  I love my Fitbit and all the support here, thank you for that 🙂 xx

That is very cool of the police officer to have said that to him! 🙂 It seems funny to me that in times like those where a car accident happens, they are often sweet and kind to you no matter whether or not who's fault it was. Even if some of the temperatures of the driver's run high. But that the minute they pull you over for whatever reason they have to pull you over they are nasty to you. Or rather I ought to say that you never know if the cop will be nice or a complete @ss.

I had a cop pull me over in a parking lot on my way home from the gym once. It had just happened after I made it across four lanes of traffic (two going one direction and two going the other). He kept on asking me if I was in some sort of hurry or if there was some sort of an emergency. Then he asked me if I did not see that the roads were wet (it just rained). He also said that I was going 30 in a parking lot and had to slam on my breaks at the stop sign. By the end I wanted his name and badge number because of the way he treated me, but I decided to leave well enough alone. Especially since I didn't get a ticket lol....he was just so rude!!
