Daily step goal

ANSWERED

So I got my Fitbit 3 months ago as a way to motivate myself to be healthier.

Quickly realized I wasn't getting close to the 10k step goal that was part of the initial settings so I reset the goal at 8k for a while, and then upped it to 9k after I was consistently reaching that goal. I tried going back to the 10k last week and I'm getting discouraged with how hard it is for me to achieve this goal.

Is there a rational behind the 10k goal? I find myself so far behind that I'm getting less steps overall that with the goal set at 9k. Is there any reason I shouldn't go back to 9,000/day?

If you get more steps by setting your goal to 9K than when you set your goal to 10K, then it is better for you to set your goal to 9K steps. I think their might be a scientific paper behind the number on how much we should move a day to be healthy, but it is better to do what you can than to be so discouraged that it makes you do less. Maybe one day you will get there, maybe not, but focus on what you can do now.

There is no set step goal. You do what you can. If you can not make the 10K then by all means go  back to what you can do.

The step goal is not dependent on the model of tracker you have. You can modify the step goal (as well as any other goal) via the mobile app or your Dashboard at www.fitbit.com.

Mobile app: click on the step tile, then on the cog wheel in the upper right corner, then on Steps.

Dashboard: click on the Today tile, then on the cog wheel in lower left corner (hover over it to make it visible).

Thanks so much for your response. I had found directions online but I was using my desktop and my phone app. It's done, and I appreciate your reply.

Hi! I have the same problem. I work in an office so getting 10k steps is usually a challenge for me unless I'm going for a run after work (so that means that winters can be especially tough). I have my daily step goal set to 8000, because I know that's a more realistic number for me day-to-day. I toy with the idea of kicking it up to 10k again but for now I'm happy with it set lower.

I've been sitting so long in front of a pc, I found 5,000 to be a challenge. I just move up to 5,500. Got to start somewhere. We'll get to that mighty 10,000 as long as we keep at it. 🙂
