Dancing December 2023 Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

Well how about that? It is the last month of the 2023, holiday food everywhere you look, all sorts of social obligations so .... why not INDULGE? Hmmmm ... Cookies!

OK, let's not go completely overboard. Recommit to your minimum daily fitness goals so you've got something reasonable to beat next month when you plan out 2024. As for eating, worry less about what you are trying to avoid, and more on what you are trying to include. Enjoy the holidays and your time with friends and family, and try to get a few of them to join you on a walk around the neighborhood.

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month look for and post pictures at least 3 outdoor holiday displays while out and about.

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Looks like I'm going come up short on weight-lifting days and dry days. I hurt my back early in the month, so that accounts for the missed weight-lifting days. It is feeling better, so that should go up next month. No real excuse for missing the dry days other than too much social drinking. That caused me to gain few pounds too, so I think it will be a mostly dry January for me.

We've had some rainy days and fog this week. Got out for a hike a few days ago in some very moody woods.

Make some forward progress after my referral appointment.

I'm awaiting a phone call from the specialist I saw.  She's puzzled as well, so is consulting others, which I take as a good sign.  Have to wait two weeks for the call, though.

The call came.  the meeting my specialist was going to had been cancelled 😟 but she's organised for me to see someone else soon - she worked hard to do that as she was about to enjoy her Christmas time off.

I guess that's progress - of a sort.

I'm adding another target, which is linked to my stated goals for 2023 so it's to complete

10 million steps for 2023

100 vertical miles

end the year on an 11-year total of 111,111,111 steps exactly!

this one's quite tricky - I need to keep over 15,000 steps per day, but mustn't do many more, to avoid overshooting.

I'll update this tomorrow....

Bah!  Overshot by 11!

We keep our Christmas decorations pretty small, and much the same as the year before.

This fellow is quite a recent addition, though, and lives just outside our front door.
