Dancing December Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

Here we are — the last month of the year, holiday food everywhere you look, all sorts of social obligations ... so .... why not recommit to your minimum daily fitness/eating goals -- and maybe even DANCE a bit around the mistletoe -- just to make sure you don’t lose the baseline you’ll aim to beat next month when you plan out 2019?

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.
How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month look for and post pictures of at least 3 outdoor holiday displays while out and about.

Union Station - DCUnion Station - DC 34th Street - Baltimore34th Street - Baltimore

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

I’m enjoying all the photos everyone! @WendyB - thanks! The (sugar) cookies are pretty tasty.

Well, about those cookies... We had our Christmas cookie exchange this morning. We were few but what a variety! Of course, one feels ‘obliged’ to take one from each type, to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings. I decided, though, to eat half of each, and bring them home to finish later. Next thing I knew, I’d finished them off! 😮 “The best laid plans of mice and men.”  Unfortunately this gave me a bad stomach, and I had to cancel line dance, and take it easy. “Tomorrow is another day.”

A sample of the goodies from this morning:

Yes, they were all absolutely delicious, @WendyB! But I overdosed on sugar — first time for everything. My gut did not appreciate the sudden influx of so many sweets! 😂

December Goals:

12/12-12/31

10000 steps 18 times - 1/18

Post 12 times - 1/12

Record food daily (19) - 1/19

Weigh daily (19) - 1/19

Went to rehearsal last night and it was running long and I was thinking I was going to have to do the march around the living room to make the 10K steps, but just as I fastened my seatbelt the watch went.

I wish I still noticed my watch vibrate - I had a lot of success and I think it was good mentally when I was doing the hourly challenge, but I noticed I missed 3 of them yesterday and never noticed.

Board meeting tonight.  Not as stressful as last year, but I still find myself getting snarly.  Plus it is in a food/ alcohol environment which is tougher.

@Jotex- those cookies look so good!  I used to be involved in an annual cookie party where we brought home about 3 dozen.  I am glad and sad that I don't do that anymore.

@Baltoscott- somehow I suspect some of the activities on the challenge will be beyond me, but worth a shot.

Hoping to get an outside walk in today.  We'll see if I can convince the dog to come with me.  He is a fair weather dog for sure.

@WendyB - I love that mini horse picture!  We have a mini therapy horse that comes to the hospitals where I work.  The patients love it when the mini horse comes to visit. How cool that you get to see them on every walk!

ARRRRGGGH.  I so very rarely get a chance to be social with my friends because of my weird hours.  I have my only holiday gathering tonight and I started getting sick yesterday.  I missed the last 2 gatherings because of illness.

Steps 15,000 per day

20+ floors per day I cut my floors back because sometimes the weather or working in the yard keeps me from getting lots of floors.

7+ miles per day

2 sets of 12 reps of dumbbell curls, triceps, shoulder shrugs, and chest flys, 3 times a week.

Three or more pics of each scavenger hunt topic.

Check in at least 2x a week.

12/10 steps 24,143, floors 24, miles 11.58

12/11 steps 24,171, floors 35, miles 11.27

12/12 steps 20,622, 32 floors, 9.81 miles  Big day! We drove to Springfield to pick up our "new" rescue dog.  More below.

12/13 steps 23,753, 11 floors, miles 11.92

About the dog. Jake was just released from Pups for Parole program. He spent 5 weeks training at prison with a prisoner for puppy school. He is a 3 year old+- Border Collie - Blue Healer + others mix. Seems to be smart as a whip and full of energy. Must have been a city dog because he sure loves the country! Unfortunately it has been cloudy and rainy for the two days he has been here. Tomorrow will be better with sunshine and warmer weather. I've been walking him every two hours, at 8:30 pm he goes into his kennel and sleeps until 6 AM. Right now he is sitting by our front door watching the squirrels play.
