Disparity between mileage calculated by Fitbit and Orangetheory Fitness high quality treadmills

Hello friends!

I wondered if anyone has any comments to share on this topic.  I am a longtime Fitbit user and LOVE the motivation I get from it each day.  I recently upgraded to the Ionic wrist model.

I work out at Orangetheory Fitness most days.  They have very high quality treadmills - the best I have ever used.  I am a runner and run on these treads almost every day.

I noticed that the OTF tread mileage and the Fitbit mileage for the same run on the tread are very different. Example: Today the OTF treadmill said I ran 3.55 miles during class. At the end of the same run, my Fitbit gave me 2.65 miles. Ouch, that's a huge difference!

I find that the calorie burn and heart rate measurements are very close between OTF heart rate monitor I also wear and the Fitbit. But the mileage is not close when compared.

What gives? Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Mileage without GPS (e.g. when walking/running indoors) is number of steps x stride length. If it is important for you that Fitbit reports a more accurate mileage when using your gym’s treadmill, edit the strides (there’s one for walking and one for running) in your personal settings so that once multiplied by steps they match the treadmill numbers.

It is a known inaccuracy between treadmill and tracker. the zip and one are a little closer, but any wrist model is off. I am a treadmill runner too and when I look at my totals on the app, I get a little sad. since it isn't counting the step/mileage properly it shows me at a much slower run.. that hurts more than the step count. But to be fair, I run to burn so in the end I mostly care that I burned calories and sweated out salt and other weekend delights 🙂
