Do I need to take my phone on a run?

Evening everyone,

Apologies if this is in the wrong part of the forum. Finally got back into running, and decided to join the hype of the fitness tracker world. However, I hate running with my phone stuck to my arm , especially as phones these days seem to be getting bigger and bigger.

Therefore, before I buy, I was wandering, with GPS fitbits, like the Charge 2, can I leave my phone at home and just run with the fitbit and have distance, steps, calories tracked etc? Also, do ones without GPS track this data? or is it just steps ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Welcome to the forums!

The only one you would not need to take your phone with is the Surge.. It has GPS built in

Charge 2 Uses Connected GPS which you do need to have your phone for.

You can compare them here:

Thanks for the speedy response Wendy - any chance you would know if the Charge 2 or Alta HR are any good for tracking calories burnt for activities such as weight lifting ?

I use the Charge 2 for Cross fit and Weight training.  It does better than just a step based tracker.

I have a charge 2 and am more then happy with it. Of course it's the only tracker I've ever owned so far lol

I have an Alta HR (used to have the Alta), and it tracks steps, distance (although it's based on stride length times how many steps, so maybe not accurate), and calories burned. If you don't need to be precise, which I don't, then it doesn't matter. And you'll be able to sync your tracker when you get back. I regularly go for walks without my phone (if I'm going to the park or using a treadmill in my building's fitness center), and it collects my data in the device.

I will, however, have to consider checking the stats on the treadmill versus the stats my Fitbit spits out for that period of exercise.
