I use an app called Map my run, which auto logs it on fitbit

I don't, I just take the very active minutes/steps. I've found that logging runs seperately can confuse the app quite a bit and my step numbers flick incessantly between two different figures in an annoying fashion! 

 

For distance, mapping etc. I also use Map My Run. Smiley Happy

Yes, because for running (even with manually tested and entered stride length) the calorie count is way off compared to more accurate means.

 

But that's all I care about, usually the miles goes down after my manual entry, and steps is adjusted down, but at least I got the calories where I want them.

What do you use to obtain calories burned during your runs, then? Is Fitbit under- or over-estimating calories, compared to the allegedly more accurate count?

I also use a running app for distance and mapping, as well as heart rate data. Instead of Map My Run (which I briefly tried), I prefer using Runtastic Pro. Like you, I don't log anything from the running app into Fitbit: I just don't see the point, and this would most likely mess things like very active minutes.

What Fitbit data gets overriden, when you auto-sync the Map My Run data to your Fitbit account?

I'm using VO2max test data for my personal calorie burn formula, which as studies have shown matches up within 20-30 cal/hr to walk/run calculators based on pace/incline/weight. That's about 3% or better.

 

Now Fitbit tries to use that basic formula too and for walking is indeed very close, but running it loses it, probably because of the variety of stride length changes as incline changes, and it knows nothing about that.

 

It usually goes over on miles, not realizing my stride length is shorter many times per step, but under on calories, not realizing the extra effort of up and down hills.

Of course that means on manual correction, my steps and miles go down while calories goes up.

On flatish course it's usually under by 8-10%, or hill specific course 15-20% under.

If your running is really just on the verge of VAM, very true. I've never lost VAM though with manual correction.

Hi all,

 

I've been running for many, many years so I'm an old dog.

 

I do log my runs separately and always have.  I started using an EXCEL spreadsheet I developed and still use it.  As I said I'm an old dog.

 

I use the Nike chip in my shoe and the wrist band to keep track of just my run.  I have the Fitbit in my pocket and use that throughout the day for totals of just about everything.

 

I don't track my sleep because quite honestly if I track one more thing my friends will think I'm nuts.

Yes I do.  I like to keep my walking steps and miles separate from my running for my personal log.  I also find that I can't get the fitbit running stride set correctly no matter what I try.  Using the start stop activity capability of the fitbit ONE I can see separate entries and then do a manual log to adjust the distance.
