Hi guys. Just exchanged a pair of hiking boots I bought at REI because the ankle support on the left boot was rubbing my ankle as I walked. When I bought these boots last weeks, I did so without asking to be measured because, after all, I "knew" my size! For years, I believed that I am a medium width. No problem. Why waste time being measured? Well, I was wrong. The rubbing was due to a poor fit.
Fortunately, I had an extremely helpful, patient and knowledgeable person help me today. She visually noticed my feet are narrow--or at least not medium. I politeley balked at that. She then invited me to get measured. Sure enough, I am a narrow (between B and C--not D as I have long believed.)
I was then shown several hiking boots to accomodate a narrower foot--and the problem is solved. Yay! Moral of the story, I encourage you to always get measured for length and width when buying running, hiking or other fitness shoes. It just might make a difference in your comfort--and desire to work out.
