Does anyone have intense itching on your legs after walking?

When I finish walking, my legs itch a lot.  Drives me crazy.  Lasts about 15 minutes and then subsides.  Mosty in my thighs and knee areas.

How new an activity is walking for you? How long are your walks? If you haven't walked longer distances for many years, you should start slowly, so as to allow your body to get used to it. Do you use proper shoes? Are you overweight? Wendy Bumgardner has great tips about walking on about.com. I am overweight, however I have been walking for quite some time.. Today I walked about three miles.  I do wear proper foot wear.

After the itching stops, my legs, just above my knees, get bright red and very hot.  Maybe I'm just strange.

Thanks for your input.

If it's something new (you didn't get it previously when performing the same activity), maybe you should seek medical advice.

Given where you are having the itching, it occurs to me that you could be having a contact response to your exercise pants, or your detergent.  Is it the fronts of your thighs/knees only, or the whole way around? New pants? Could be the texture.

I think I know what you're talking about.  I get that when I jog though, as opposed to walking. If it's the same thing i somtimes get, it's more like a burning itch IN your skin as opposed to on it, and happens when I jog when it's cold out.  I don't know what it is, but I figure it's natural. It is very irritating though.

Edit:  Ok, you got me curious and I did some quick googling, and it looks like it's related to having bad circulation. When you don't excersise enough your capillaries get closed off.  When you DO get the blood pumping, it forces blood into those closed off capillaries. It goes away with regular excercise, as the capillaries stay open. Personally, If I were you, I'd interpret the itch as a sign that you're now doing good things for yourself.  🙂

YES, IT IS THE FRONT AND SIDES ONLY, NOT IN BACK.

THE PANTS ARE NOT NEW, AND I'VE USED THE SAME LAUNDRY DETERGENT FOR YEARS.

IT HAPPENS EVEN IF I WEAR SHORTS.

STILL A MYSTERY.

Thanks!!  I'll take it as good sign as well and I'll keep at it!  Thank you for your information and advice.

Is it cold where you are?  I remember when I would jog in shorts when it was cold and damp and when I would get back home, my legs were VERY red, hot and itchy.

Yes, its been on the cool side.  I guess yesterday it was around 20.  It does seem to  happen more when it is cold out now that I think back.  Thank you!

Sorry for the all caps earlier....I have a little bit of a vision thing going on and its easier for me to see, but I forget that I lock in all caps.  I'm not yelling!!!

Maybe some kind of allergic reaction? In one of the gyms I used to work out on, if the fan was on and I was near the corner of the room I would get some horrible itching on my head and face (no hair on my head). It was not a normal itch on a spot of skin. It was intense and almost seemd to move in a wave. I assumed it was some dust being kicked up. I have problems in general with skin allergies/sensitivities. Cortisone cream helps.

The only other times in my life that this kind of intense itching happened was when I was in a building with some construction going on. But to a much lesser degree, on high allergen days, any exposed skin can itch.

I have asked my Dr about this itching. She says I have bad circulation. I'm not sure if that is what your problem is or not, but maybe something to look into.

I have had this issue since I was 12 ( along time).   The first time it happened I thought I ran over a wasps nest.   The doctor said it was an allergy to the lactic acid that builds up in my muscles when I exercise.  The better shape I am in the less it seems to bother me, but running always does it.

Wow... this happens to me too!  If I wear long tights, something that compresses my legs a bit, then it doesn't happen.  Must be a circulation thing, hmmmm
