End of year wrap-up

Hello gang,

The year 2021 is almost in the books (already is for some folks), and thought I'd tie my two main threads of the year up with a new thread (a link to the second thread is embedded in the first thread).

As some of y'all might remember, I started this year out with a thread outlining my attempt to rehabilitate my body following a several year stretch of injuries and health issues.  This thread can be found here:

While I didn't state it in my original thread, my personal goal was to run 1,200 miles in 2021; by the end of November I was in pretty good shape for hitting my goal, and then December happened; I had to deal with the following issues, in no particular order:

  • Two MRIs (still dealing with issues from the dog attack in July)
  • A colonoscopy
  • A surprise move (logistics caused our former land-lords to ask us to move at the last minute) which included looking for a new place, packing, moving, and unpacking.
  • A road trip to the NYC metro area
  • And of course, the normal work/life balance

Long story short, December shaped up to be really thin on running; so thin I wouldn't reach my goal, and given how busy I've been, my monthly and annual mileage was pretty much, "Out of sight, out of mind".  This morning I finally got around to checking, and as of my run yesterday I'd hit 1,199.46 miles for the year; not too shabby, I'm pretty sure I can get in a run long enough today to log my twelve-hundredth mile of the year.  🙂

Okay, got'er done!  I went out and ran six-tenths of a mile to reach the twelve-hundred mark, and then another six-miles for good measure; for the year I ran 1,206 miles.  🙂

Good deal Shipo! Way to overcome adversity. You pick me up because I'm not able to do much exercise at all right now. I have a Morton's Neuroma on my left foot. I haven't walked or used the rowing machine in a month and it's still messed up. I look forward to being able to get active again.

Keep on steppin' and Happy New Year

Morton's Neuroma, yikes!  I started developing that condition in my left foot back in 2014 when I was putting in lots of miles; I did a lot of research and switched to really wide running shoes, often times a "Quad-E", which seemed to allow my foot to heal.  Fortunately I caught it in time so I didn't suffer any long-term nerve damage.  What is your prognosis?

I tried getting an appt. with a podiatrist but they were closed it was a couple days before Christmas, now New Years. I'm going to their office beginning of the week. Frustrating for sure. I heard about getting shoes with a wide toe box which I thought my Brooks sneakers had. I was walking as fast as I could for 30 seconds then walk briskly for 2 min. Fast again for 30 seconds, then 2 min. recovery. I walked on the street, the hard surface didn't help. It was similar to from couch to 5k but walking. Anyway, Happy New Year and we'll keep on keeping on.

@shipo 1206 miles running? I haven't reached this much. Strava says that I ran 1712km which is about 1063 miles (153 runs, 161 hours). Looking at the training calendar, I had several long breaks but I expected to do worse. 2021 wasn't my year. I dramatically reduced bouldering and rock climbing (moved more to the countryside so no climbing gyms and the rural area I live in is rather flat so it's always a long drive to any crag). On the bright side, I started competing in running events which was quite an unexpected turn of events 🙂

Congratulations @t.parker, life doesn't always go the way we planned, so we need to adapt or shrivel on the fine; sounds like you adapted.  🙂

Assuming I continue recovering from the dog attack and keep my running up, I'm also hoping to start competing in running events in 2022, and with any luck, "aging-up" to the 65-69 year old age group, I might even be able to pull off a few top-3 finishes in my age group.

Keep us posted on your progress and any noteworthy race finishes.

Hey @SunsetRunner, one thing which I forgot to mention regarding the Morton's Neuroma I was experiencing several years ago, shoelace tightness.  Back when I was first running track and cross country for a team in the early 1970s I was told by various coaches to keep the laces of my shoes tight; yeah, about that, when my left foot started experiencing this phenomena I tried various things, and one which helped a lot was to loosen the laces of my left shoe.  I'm not sure how tight you wear your shoes, but it might be worth a try.

Hey @shipo , thanks for the info. I did tighten my laces, in fact I made sure they were tight. Live and learn I guess. Just another bonus of our "golden" years.
