FYI July 2020 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Just a little For Your Information that we are halfway through 2020, and it is time to sign up for another monthly challenge. And a reminder that if you happen to see this for the first time mid-month, jump on in; there is no need to wait for another challenge to start next month.

                                     

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

 

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

 

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

 

Suggested Posting Format    
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

The theme this month is COVID-19 Related.  Is your area opening up? Or shutting back down?  What does that look like. In the US we are seeing spikes in the South and West and downward trends in the Northeast.  But that will probably change as ‘opening up’ seems to put the brakes on ‘downward trend.’

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

 

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Goals: Until I come up with a more permanent fix I'll stick to my goals of 8,000 steps per day and attempt to get at least 12 of 14 hours active with a minimum of 250 steps per hour.

 

Decided to up my game a bit this past week and got more steps per day. Still can't walk up the hills so I stayed on the flats and walked to my gate and mailbox more often.

 

On July 4th had 9,167, dropped to 8,600 on the 5th, then got over 10,000 the rest of the week. Three days over 11 k.  week of July 5 - 11 saw 13.6 hours average hourly activity per day.

Bah -- weight is still trending up.  

 

That Grindelwald pic looks like a postcard @Jotex. I want to go. Masks on public transit in Baltimore/DC for the past several months. It hasn't affected me so far since I've been teleworking since the end of March. 

 

A lot of our stores now have one-way aisles to help with the social distancing. It seems to be a heavy  mental lift for a lot of folks. We tend to wander while shopping. Or maybe we are not so good with arrows. And then there is the problem of the que for the drug counter blocking the designated walkway ;-).  We are pretty good at wearing masks inside, though.

@WendyB Thanks!  My sewing skills are basic, so I've had my mom sew up masks for me.  Even with her arthritic thumbs, she's better at making the alterations as needed to have them fit better.

*🙄 Weight still going up instead of going down, but I am pretty sure it’s due to: 1) lower step count & Agility to exercise; 2) comfort food (& drink) due to knee pain. SO, I really NEED to get my knee better to turn things around!

 

Today I went to line dance class for the 1st time in 4 weeks. Only almost tripped once, and no major pain issues so far. Although I will likely not meet all my goals this month, I prefer to leave them and see what I can do. Wish me luck!

Went to the tennis courts near my house this evening to practice some turns on my uni, and I realized the very fact that the nets are up and people can play tennis is a scavenger hunt pic. The nets came down at the end of March and didn't get put pack up until again until late late June.  The basketball hoops in the half court I am standing in to take the shot still have not been put back up ... to discourage bigger groups.  

 

The whole thing worked out for me because without nets or hoops, the place was pretty vacant for me to learn to uni.

@Jotex  Thanks!  I know what you mean about weight going up.  Part of my problem has been the crazy heat wave we've had.  The other part is my inability to fall asleep at night, and then I don't get up in the morning in time enough to do anything before work.  😴
