Hot vinyasa flow yoga

I do a lot of hot vinyasa flow yoga. I use my fitbit for my yoga practice and the disparity between the calories my fitbit says I use and advice elsewhere,plus what I feel I am doing in terms of physical activity,are not comparable. Am I the only person having this issue??

It's great to see you around @celiawheelia. Are you manually logging the activity? If you aren't, I recommend manually logging the activity by doing the following from your Android Fitbit app:

 

1. Tap the exercise tile. 
2. Tap the timer in the top right corner; this will take you to the Mobile Run screen. 
3. Tap "Log" at the top of the screen. 
4. Log your activity. 

 

After logging the activity you will be able to see the information registered during that time.

I have set up yoga as an exercise on my fitbit app. I manually record the exercise and it records with no problem. However,it's showing a significant disparity between what's being recorded and what other vinyasa yoga info says. 300-400 calories difference for a 90 minute hot class. The tracker can't take the heat and muscle work,using own body weight,into account.

Thanks for the information @celiawheelia. The intensity of this type of exercise don't work to burn as much calories as you would like. You can burn many calories by doing activities like walking, running playing tennis, activities that keep you active.

I'm not actually to bothered with the calorie count,however,hot vinyasa flow is as energetic as jogging,it's a very moved based exercise and my heart rate often gets into peak and at least 60% in cardio range. Maybe fitbit could look at this increasingly popular form of exercise and adding it realistically to the app? Thanks anyway

I agree FitBit should have multiple options for manually tracking yoga: one for peaceful yoga, and one for energetic yoga. Totally different activities, like the difference between walking or jogging.

Yes! I hope they fix this. I'm tired of people thinking this is a slow "yin" tai-chi type yoga. These newer types of yoga involve plenty of activity, isometric weight lifting and cardio. I don't understand how I can "log" the activity for it to read my heart rate and movement and say I've burned "x" calories, but when I tell it I did yoga, it's only this minimal "y" calories tha I could burn laying on the couch. I find the above response to "run" to burn more calories frankly pretty rude. I guarantee my absence of breath, 40-60% of my workout at peak rate and my next morning DOMs would say I'm doing something.

I think you need to take a class and then maybe judge what is active or not. I can get my heart rate staying in my peak as long as I can on the treadmill and I'm adding in isometric weights and active stretches at the same time. This is not "old school" yoga that you think of vegans in retreats doing in the sun. Modern yoga is like Crossfit on a mat.
