How can a person average 80,000 steps in a day?

ANSWERED

I don't mean to call anybody out or question somebody's integrity but there are fitbit users who average better than 75K steps a day over the course of a week. Assuming they get eight hours of sleep, that means they're walking almost 40 minutes each hour every hour of the day unless they're asleep. Every day for a week.

It is possible that they're running or training for a marathon or walking really fast or are really really into this walking thing but it seems like it is too much. Any way you do the math, it is an incredible amount of walking and it is sustained over the entire week.

What's the most anyone has ever walked in a day? How about in a week?

I wonder what it would be like if I got up at five am and walked all day until midnight? Doing the math, it would theoretically be possible to break 100k but I don't think I could get anywhere near that. And 80k a day for a week seems too much too.

What do you think?

I'm convinced the Fitbit's are connected to ceiling fans or hamster wheels. Just saying... happy trails:glowing_star:

My earlier comment was for Walshly re 20k per day. Sorry for any misspellings for your name.

I have not figured out how to show my reply referencing the exact thread writers comments.
Anyone with advice on that would be greatly appreciated! Also my Fitbit page name was changed because of another similar username.
I am now under pasopetite. Re this particular thread plus those ref extra-ordinary stats are mine.
Any other threads are not.

Assumption: your "Compose Post" tab page is set to "Rich Text" and not "HTML".

The easiest way to reference the poster you are responding to is to type in the "at" symbol (i.e. "@"); a dialog box will pop up with the names of the various posters in the thread; simpy choose the name and it will be dropped into your text.  Like this: @paso.  🙂

The other way to reference a specific post is to click on the "Quote" button just above the right corner of the dialog box you use to type your response (which is how I quoted your post above).

I think that 80,000 is a weekly average ... not daily.   I challenged myself one weekend to see how many steps I could get in one day... my highest in a single day was 60,000 steps, earning a Fitbit "blue suede shoe".... and that's pretty much being consistant being active from 6 am to 8 pm .... including cardio machines , 10 miles run, a 5k, gym workouts , etc etc.   Not doubting someone's could do 80,000 in a single day.....knowing first hand what it takes to get 60,000..... I'm skeptical

Best Answer
I've got the 60,000 badge and like you that how long it took me but I know
for sure that there was others who did double the distance in the same time
I did my 60,000!

I'm doing 4 more charity walks in 2017 some are longer distances so I
reckon I'll probably hit the 80,000 on at least one of them.

@efoy89 Congratulations on your success and for your future charity walks..Your training schedule must be very strict to achieve these distances.

When I heard the interview with the person below she wasn't concerned because her training regime had her prepared...

An Australian just won the Womens World Championship for 100 km in Spain.  I will leave that to the experts to convert that to estimated steps....

Here is the quote from the news..

"Aussie Kirstin Bull won the 100km world championship
Kirstin Bull, who hails from Sunbury, has taken out the 100km (62 miles) world championship in Spain in the incredible time of 7 hours and 34 minutes. That's an average speed of 13kph (8mph)! "

80,000 is a great goal for many of us.After all 7 days at 10,000 is ballpark # .  80,000 in one day except for elite athletes seems unlikely.  The wear and tear not to mention the recovery time for the rest of us makes this an unreasonable number of steps.Smiley Wink

Paso, I've posted this countless times, no one, even an elite athlete could or would ever log 80K steps per day, everyday.  You are correct the wear and tear alone would would make this venture inane, let alone the recovery time.  Elite marathoners prepare for and run fewer than 4-5 marathons a year and a marathon is less than 80K steps.  Their training schedule would never include running the marathon distance everyday.  People who claim to do 80K steps a day will one day pay an awful price, but by then it will be too late.

Like you I have doubted that number of steps in one day but as I am not an elite athlete (alas no sports endorsements😥)  I don't have a gauge of stride and steps in a marathon.  My only marathon was on a bus in Greece to Marathon.

Glad to know I'm not alone with this thought.  Happy trails:glowing_star:

Consistently every day I agree but it's certainly possible to get the
80,000 steps a day badge if you're in an ultra marathon - 100km+

efoy:  I agree someone could log 80K steps once or twice during some even.  I would like to hear from people who log between 50 and 80K steps on a daily basis.  I would ask them why they do it and what so they think they receive from those steps health wise.  Do they think there is any downside to logging 50 to 80K sreps on a daily basis?

The other day, I met Greg Hindy in Pueblo, Colorado. He was on a trek from Dead Horse, Alaska to Austin, Texas.

He made the 9,000 mile trek above in one year a couple years ago. That works out to about 50,000 steps a day plus bonus steps for things other than walking the route. He walks about 25 miles a day and doesn't worry much about the weather.

You can Google his name and find lots of newspaper articles and interviews. Wish he'd write a book.

He does it to disconnect from society.

I just got my Fitbit yesterday. I wore my wife's a couple times and hit +20k both times. I have 25,401 right now on my 1st day. I own a lawn care company, I'm always moving. I am curious to know if any of my steps come from driving my truck or big mowers.

@cadaoas55- it's possible that some of your steps are coming from that.  If it's a large number you can add the activity 'driving' manually and it will remove the steps.  Check your dashboard to see how many steps you're doing throughout the day and see if you can tell.  If it's not a large number honestly I would just ignore it.
