This is mainly for the top 20 on the fitbit leaderboard,I am currently in training for a 24hr race running between 10 and 20 miles plus walking and doing daily house chores as i am a house husband roughly just over 40,000 steps daily yet there is still at least 10 to 15 steppers still above me who do even more steps than me,I am interested what they do on a daily basis to do that many steps in a day.

I've run in quite a few long duration races over the last few years, some of them logging over 30 miles in a 24 hour period. That said, never once have I hit 40,000 steps in a single calendar day (although I have gotten over 50,000 steps in the 24 hour period spread over two calendar days for a few of the events). I would argue your best training approach would be to ignore the high step counts of some of the folks you're tracking, and concentrate on LSD training.
In case you're wondering, by utilizing LSD training (typical training runs were in the 12,000-17,000 step range), I ran a total of 32.8 miles at about a 9:00 pace during my last event, and that was when I was 58 years old. 🙂

Everyone is different. Some of them might be cheating, which I will never understand why? But some people have jobs that keep them on their feet 8-10 hours a day. Some like @shipo works on his farm, and runs every day. The guys that work in the warehouse at my office are on their feet all day. Nurse, waitresses, etc.
Most people have seditaray jobs, so the concept of getting so many steps a day sounds insane. My wife does 15,000-20,000 steps a day just taking care of the animals on our property. I myself walk 16,000 steps a day, and have only one 25,000 step day, and 5-6 20,000 step days. I wonder how someone can get 40,000 steps a day! 25,000 just about killed me.
So I guess it's about about fitness level, and our expectations...

I guess I don't get it. looking at your stats you do 40K or more a day. Why are you concerned about others?
Do what you can and quit worrying about others.

Depends on the person....we have a guy who always out steps everyone in the group, 30+ steps or more a day BUT he is a chef at Cheesecake Factory! On his feet all day running around here and there for hours. Then there are some who are in the military...PT in the morning, walking and standing all day, especially if they are in the field training, and then they hit the gym in the evening (speaking specifically of my son:)). When he is on he is ON! One friend spent two months training for her half marathon, so she was putting up some serious steps every single day. It really depends.... Hey, I did a dance class and racked up 6,687 steps in 1 hour!! And I felt every step when it was over!

I think its partly work, partly priorities, partly availability. I have several fitbit friends in challenges who are in Europe. Very few people drive anywhere. They either walk all the way, or they walk to the metro and then walk some more to their destination. I will never outstep them no matter how many runs or walks I take because my lifestyle is so different. I accept it and applaud their achievements, while still trying my hardest to get at least within 10K steps of them.

My goal is set at 10,000, but sometimes I get over 20,000. As long as I make my goal, I'm a happy camper.

"How do other people do thousands of steps daily"? Sometimes, they just go for a nice long walk...today I just took a walk around a country block, all 6.2 miles of it....

depends on what you do, your lifestyle etc
for example, when I used to work at a computer store, I used to walk from the collection point to the warehouse and back all day long
so even at say 1 step per second, take out lunch break, and those times when I had nothing to do, I would do over 20k, and that is basing it on 1 step per second, now bearing in mind that I am taking orders into the warehouse and then taking orders back out, I will have been going faster than that
now, at a later job, working in a call centre, I was sat on my backside all day, doing 20k would have been difficult
just because you have an active lifesytle or job, unless you are actually moving, then it means nothing when it comes to steps
for example, I used to be a chef as well, but most of my movement was moving my arms not legs, yet I was active, ask any chef in a busy restaurant how hard it is on busy nights, yet steps would have been low
like yourself, I know how much effort I have to put in to get 30K+ steps, so to see people do several times that in some challenges makes me wonder what they do, but I do not go round accusing them of cheating, it might bother some, but going round calling people cheats etc is just going to cause trouble, and unless you have 100% proof, you are just presuming that they are cheating
I know how much effort I have to put in to do 30k+ in a day, now bearing in mind that I am not working, so have all day, I could go round accusing those that work 8 hours a day and do similar amounts of steps as cheating, after all, doing 30k in 16 hours is a lot easier than doing 30k in 8 hours, what is worse are those that say they work full time, look after the house and then do 30k and then accuse people like myself as cheats, when they are doing similar amount of steps in a quarter of the time.... just makes me laugh
if I were to say walk/jog for 30 mins then rest for 30 mins and so on, in a day, I would do 48480 steps at 1 steps per second, 1 steps per second is not exactly challenging, it is all down to your fitness level and how much 'spare' time you have
some people in the challenges I am in do 100k-200K, if I am cheating, they what are they doing? do we accusing them of cheating? no, are we bothered? no, after all it is nearly always the same bunch of people in the challenges, like I said, the only thing missing is exchanging cooking recipes.....

As someone who's lucky if i can hit sub 10:00 pace on a short 'fast' distance, I just wanted to say props on running 9:00 pace on an LSD!

Thanks! At the moment I'm rehabbing from a non-running related injury (torn abdominal muscles), so I'm keeping my LSD pace a bit slower. 🙂

My only question was they never seem to have a off day ie rest were they would do less steps ..They seem to be going 365 days of the year,----anyway I shall have a few beers later with my feet up after a few hard days training 24hr race coming up in 7 days time😀😀
Is your Ultra time or distance? How many miles to you figure to cover during the event?
