How do people average 50000 steps per day?

Who has the time to average 50,000 steps a day!? How can this be possible?

BruceBu: I'm sure some individuals who suffer from OCD have logged 50K
steps per day, I ask why? What"s the point? What does it prove? I'm done
commenting on this subject because it's absurd, inane and in no way
guarantees improved physical fitness.

@Corney I do it because I like it, it makes me feel good, resting hr 55, resting bp 105/65, cholesterol: tot 130, HDL 70, and I can eat as much as I want - up to ~4500 kcal/day. Besides, it obviously irritates cynics like you, and that too is fun. Goodbye - you know what they say about the door . . .!

Later in the day doesn't work because it's quickly rising to the 90's now. However, I will take a modified version of your advice tomorrow morning:

 

80 minutes, 10,800 steps, C135, HR106-116. R60 W20. Time for 500 steps: 3:42. 

 

I'll be playing catch-up most of the time, but I think it will work out. If not, I'll go 100 minutes if my HR is good.

It was a fun experiment. I did 50,000 steps today. I'm 229 lbs, 5' 6" and 34 years old. I can only jog for about 6 minutes at a time before switching back to a walk. I've gotten over 10,000 steps everyday since I got my Fitbit on April 1st. 

I just finished my 50,000 steps at 10:45 tonight. 

 

This was a really good day to do it. I was able to just eat a ton of food. I burned 5528 calories (as of 10:45, might be more by midnight) I ate around 3000 calories because that was simply all I could stomach eating. It was a lot of fun to just keep eating at the party instead of taking the tiniest bits of everything. 

 

I doubt I could do it regularly because my job is just sedentary. But, if things ever change where I have an active job again I'd probably attempt it more often. 

 

I'm sure the scale will be up tomorrow as my legs are a bit puffy. 

 

It's definitely an experiment in mental strength. I started out with a pretty boring audiobook, finally found a decent one and that made it a lot better.

@JenniferinFL Congrats, shows that it doesn't have to be terribly fast (4.5 - 5 k/hr), and that you can still intersperse other demands of life. It is more a matter of commitment, eh? 🙂

Exactly. I'm definitely not fast. I was aiming for about 5000 steps in 50 minutes and then a 10 minute break to round out the hour and then start again. I did most of my steps walking around in circles in my own home. I don't walk in place, because I know that throws the calorie count off and I am trying to get as close to an accurate calorie count as possible. But, yeah, I had a lot of interruptions. Had to let the dogs out repeatedly, get snacks for my kid, play with the new pet rat, put together a party. 

I did go out around 7:30 or so and do a 12 minute walk/jog outdoors. But, I just have too many demands on my time at home. I had to fit the walking in around the other things I had to do. 🙂

I went out and did a short 12 minute trail for part of it, but, it was rainy, muggy and 90 something degrees. Weather was just not appropriate for doing most of it outside, so it was inside or not at all. Inside was nice, for part of it I had some BBC documentaries going in the background. But, I kept slowing down to watch what was happening, so had to switch back to an audiobook.. Because I was walking, most of the effort was mentally challenging. Only the last 5000 steps was really physically challenging, I was walking a bit carefully at that point and a bit concerned about what today would be like.. lol It's not as bad as I thought it would be, a little stiff when I first woke up, but, now that I've been awake 20 minutes or so it just feels like the day after leg day at the gym or the day after a 30,000 step day at a theme park (but, pushing a stroller there, so all my steps don't get counted and it's more work..)

 

I'm really amazed that my weight only ticked up .4 lbs. I ate in the neighborhood of 3000 calories(had a 2700+ calorie deficit) , drank 21 cups of water and something like 5 cups of coffee. I definitely have some mild swelling going on. Was expecting like a 2 lb weight gain. I really wish my job was more active. More steps and more food is a lot more fun.

Today's Goal: 100 minutes, 13,500 steps, C135, HR106-116. R60 W20. Time for 500 steps: 3:42. 

 

I got too far behind while warming up during the first mile. The only way to catch up would have been to run the whole distance. I did this for a couple miles. Then I reverted to R30 W30. I ended up with 12,804 steps in 100 minutes.

 

I got the warm up exactly right, and it took 3/4 of a mile for my heart rate to touch 90 even though the first mile and a half is all up hill. My highest heart rate was 105. When it started to go up a bit, I shortened my stride length and reduced my cadence. When it was down, I increased my cadence.

3rd  and what's even more amazing is you ďid this in between setting up a party, fixing a trimmer, walking dogs, making lunch, etc etc

Yes, you are lucky, I only lived in NY a couple years. LOL  

Unless I make some major change in my work situation, I won't be able to do that on a daily basis. My daily is more like 14,000 steps, but, thanks to 50,000 step day it now looks like my average is 16,733 steps.. 

I miss warehouse work quite a bit. But, it simply isn't possible around here. That was all I did when I lived in Canada and New York. But, the south is a bit different. I'll leave it at that.

Thank you, it just makes me realize that I really want to get that 100,000 step badge one day. 🙂

I can't do 50,000 steps a day on a regular basis now, but, I'm pretty sure that I have done it before when I worked as a stocker. I didn't feel any worse than I used to feel after a 10 hour shift of stocking.

Here is a typical 50+k day - it involves one dedicated 3 hour session (~20k), the rest is simple low-level, or quick pick-up sessions. I too have a life, and I'm happy with mine. I totally understand that someone who views stepping as some sort of punishment to be suffered through or is paranoid about injury, will never understand the joys and rewards. june19stepprofile.png

Today, my goal was to see how low I could keep my heart rate during a 100 minute run walk. My goal was to keep it under 90.

Just made it. 🙂 The critical part is to get my heart rate under control at the start of the run. I use R10 W30 while I do this. Slow is good until my heart rate drops. After that, I used R30 W30 for the rest of the time. Controlling my heart rate was easy except between about 2.75 miles and 3.75 miles which is all uphill. 

 

My other goal was to get 12,500 steps. I only got 11,865 steps. Next time, I'll set a higher target heart rate and see what happens.

(Note: Time includes pit stops.)

Comments: Finished warm up in 1/2 mile. Nothing was sore or tired.
