How do women over 60 get in shape?

Hi all!  I am starting this thread to help all the ladies from our old forum get started up again over here in the new place.  Hope you all find this thread.  Getting in shape after 60 has its own challenges especially when you have lost muscle, have slowed metabolism and hormone changes.  How are you getting and staying fit?  What s working for you?

Yes, it is a great workout. Depending on how high impact you go, it can be up to 1000 calories burned for an hour class. I stay low impact due to an artificial knee but still get 45 to 55 minutes of high activity on my Fitbit Force. And I go to four classes per week because I love it so much. I could never make myself do that much walking or cycling.

Hello

It's very good to make that. For your knee, you must try with a kinésithérapeute with the méthode Dr Busquet. It's a very good méthode. All the body is taked charged.

Have a good day.

I am new to this disussion and to using my FitBit....Just since Feb. 26. I'm over 60, a woman, and have dealt with fibromyalgia since 1991. Any tips/tricks/etc to meeting one's goals when you're in flare-up?

I loved the Fitbit Force but, unfortunately, I was one of the people who developed a rash and sent it back to Fitbit.  They refunded my purchase quite promptly and stayed in touch with me the entire time.  I am thinking of getting the Flex.  How is it different from the Force?  In the meantime, my One is doing a good job of reminding me to move.  I'm a Realtor so I'm sitting in front of my computer much of the time searching for properties for my clients.  Moving is vital!  That and a balanced diet keep me at a weight I'm not thrilled about but not out of control.  Losing the 20 to 30 pounds that would make me "slim" is the challenge.  I'm sure I'm not alone.

Wonderful to see a topic for women our age. New to fitbit and desperately needing to get in shape. Bought Flex a week ago, and trying to walk more daily and log everything I eat. Wish I could get in firmer shape and loose the tummy that seems to have grown "overnight" between ages 56 and 58... Would prefer to lose 15-20 lbs, get firmer, and most of all, gain more energy.

what an inspiration - i was just over 200 and totally frustrated because it seemed impossible to lose - I received my fitbit for christmas and at first, I have to admit, it was an effort to reach 10,000 steps and somedays it still is - but yesterday I got over 20,000 and was so excited (and tired) some days I am traveling so it is an effort to get 10,000 steps in, but until I feel the vibration in my bracklet I just keep walking - it is like my personnel goal to get the minimum of 10,000 steps - loved reading your comments and they inspire me to keep going (haven't lost much weight but anything is better than nothing)

We remember that it is never too late or too hard.  Just take it one step at a time and do not give out

wow glad to know there are more of 'me' ...over 60 (actually 65) and trying to lose weight and get fit.  I have been going to aquafit for past month, managed to lose 5 lbs....with at leat 40 to go...I find the aquafit really fun which surprises the heck out of me...haven't owned a bathing suit for over 20 years...now miss the class when I can't go.  I still work full time - shift work which adds to the dilemma of trying to lose weight....just bought my fitbit so hoping it will be an incentive to keep moving.

I have fibro, am 65 and have an artifical knee.....surprisingly I have found aquafit works really well for me...in the shallow water which is generally warm...not hot but its a good work out without any pressure on joints etc....I love it

exactly - it seems like I am going nowhere, clothes feel better and I do feel so good and it is just 'one step at a time' and remember - TODAY is the first day of the rest of your life - any the "fitbit friends" are sooooooo encouraging that a cheer makes you want to walk a little more

I have COPD and adult onset asthma, and just turned 60. BUT, it is not going to stop me. I may not run, but I can walk and garden and explore this world. An average day I get in about 12,000 steps and pull weeds and pick up trash along the way....

Hi All,  I am new to Fitbit and just starting the long journey of losing over 100 pounds.  I'm sitting on the divide between pre-diabetes and diabetes.  So ... with that as my motivation (and it really has motivated me), I'm interested in what forms of exercise work best for you.  I've lost 8 pounds so far - by changing my food intake, but getting moving is what I'm pondering now.  I'd love your input! I am a strong believer in finding what you enjoy instead of forcing yourself to do what you "should." Studies on willpower indicate that you only have a finite amount and need to save it for essential changes. My personal story is the discovery of Zumba. I now am up to four classes a week and add a day of yoga and two days of weights. But it was how much I loved Zumba after years of hating all cardio that made the change. I think bicycling, rowing and walking are boring and even more boring on machines. I could never make myself stick to them and I hated to sweat. But when I do Zumba, the music and the mental exercise is great and I sweat my way through every class with a smile on my face. Your hook may be something different - swimming, cycling, whatever. So if you are struggling to make yourself do a particular activity, you have not found the magic one yet. Keep looking.

I was just posting to go_kayak about the magic of finding the activity that makes you want to move and do it every day. I like aquafit myself, but Zumba is my magic. I keep hoping that everyone looks for the exercise that makes them happy as well as fit. There is an old joke that a diet of grapefruit and hard boiled eggs may not make you live longer, it just seems longer. I feel that way about activities that are "good for you" but not fun. You have found that place where your enjoyment gets you out of the house and moving and you get to surprise yourself every day!

Hi Prairiegirl. You go girl. I enjoy the outdoors and exploring places as well as gardening. Every year I seem to be in too much of a hurry to garden. I still have to wait, but summer is coming soon.
