How do women over 60 get in shape?

Hi all!  I am starting this thread to help all the ladies from our old forum get started up again over here in the new place.  Hope you all find this thread.  Getting in shape after 60 has its own challenges especially when you have lost muscle, have slowed metabolism and hormone changes.  How are you getting and staying fit?  What s working for you?

I am doing WW again too. Not so much militantly, but to keep me more intentional about what I eat and how much!  It is my plan to be as HEALTHY as possible in my later years.  To be responsible for what I can do to give myself the best chance of good health!

I am 71 and have always had to watch my weight since I was in my twenties.
I do watch what I eat and have weighed every day for years. This helped me
to stay on track when I would see a pound or two come on I would watch it
the next few days. I still treat myself to sweets now and than but just
careful the next day. But the fitbit has really kept me in line and my
daughter is over weight and she got one to. So now we keep tabs on each
other. We have a cruise coming up Mar. 1 and we both set a goal weight so
this has really kept us a steppin. Besides we are eating allot better. I
just had my blood work done and was shocked at the numbers and how they
came down. Thanks to the fitbit.

I have a hard time getting all my logging in too!  I guess the fact that we are more aware of what we are doing and what we are eating is a good start.  Moving more helps as well.  Good luck on your adventure.

I'm going to turn 60 in November of this year and nothing would make me happier than to lose 50 pounds by then. Last year I tried since September but failed miserably. That's when I got my Fitbit. I walk 5-7 miles a day and lost 6 pounds. It so frustrating. I eat healthy but I just don't get it. My numbers were excellent when I had my physical in Dec. but the scale is not moving. I just need that formula to make the scale move. Sign-still searching for the right formula.

I eat mostly fruits and veggies with little fish, poultry. In January I gave up all grains and bread and potatoes and still nothing. My dr. said I may be stressing my body too much and that's why I'm not losing. I'm distraught and just don't know what is right and what I should be doing anymore. I do have financial stress so I really don't know.

Set a goal for your self each day and one that you can reach. Than next
day increase a little might help you. I found the fitbit my partner as to
keep me making my steps for the day. I walk during intermissions at night
if I don't have my steps in

I love myfitbit.  I'm 73 and I go the gym 5 days a week.  I can make my10,000 as long as I go the gym and walk for an hr.

Thanks for your note to me....  I didn't get 10,000 steps yesterday and it doesn't look like I'll get there tonight.  I just finished 15 mins on the treadmill and I still have "far" to go !!

Hi all,
I have enjoyed using my Fitbit as part of my 'feeling healthy' and losing weight regime. I personally have set my Fitbit for 5000 steps a day not 10,000. I make my daily goal plus another 1500 to 2000 steps most every day. I have lost nine lbs. in the last month by regular exercise and cutting carbs. Not starvation and not killing myself to make 10,000 steps each day. I would rather meet my goal and achieve more than punishing myself for not accomplishing 10,000 steps. This is what works for me. Everyone needs to find their own formula to success!

I am just getting my fitbit back on this wk!! I will be 64 in March!! I did this for a year  2 yeears ago and got to my goal!! Shortly after I was really down on myself and gave up!!

I gained back 20 lbs and was really depressed!!

My daughter stopped by on Tuesday and asked me if I wanted to go back to fitbit and MFP!! That's all it took for me to try again!!

I feel better after just 5 days and am trying to take a less stressful approach to doing it!!

Where will I be if I don't start now and summer comes??That's what I keep telling myself!!

I was up to doing around 10,000 steps 5 days a week !! Never wearing my fitbit and becoming a couch potato!!

I stay home alot with my dear grandaughters and seem to become mostly a hermit since retiring!!

My DH loves to grocery shop so I dont even go there!!

Anyway I am ready to step and eat healthy!!

So glad to find this Discussion!!!

How fast do you go on treadmill. One of the ladies mention go slower but
longer and than you can get your steps in. Than start to in crease at a
later time

I reached my 10,000 steps again today,  My Daughter in Law called and asked if I wanted to go shopping with her.  I sure did. Lots of walking in  Target, pet store then grocery shopping. Still needed 2000 steps so on the tredmill I went. My FB motivates me every day and it helps me to get a good nights rest too.

Dear Williams2759

My trainer wants me to get my heart rate up to 134-144. This helps my metabolism and allows for a healthy weekly weight loss. I have been using the treadmill starting slow...a month ago...at 2.8-3.0 speed at 0 level. I have gotten to the point of 3.0 at a level of 2.5-4.0 ( a few intervals). I get my steps in and heart-rate up. I usually time myself for an average of 30-45 minutes, but my trainer wants me to do 4 hours of cardio per week plus one extra 1/2 hour on weight machines (I meet with her on Mon and Thursday). Friday, I walked for 60 minutes at 1.5-2.0 level and 2.8-3.0 speed. This is pretty easy for me but I was tired and had to put in the time to make my four hours. I noticed that I still got the steps in and raised my heart rate from 134-145. My learning was that speed doesn't really matter. Nor level. Time matters. And you want to get that heart rate up to lose weight if that is your goal. I am really trying to change my lifestyle AND we are going on a Windstar cruise in May! I hope this is not too much information (TMI!) 😄
