I am a desk/keyboard jockey. Any ideas on how to burn extra calories?

I usually put in at least 8 hours a day at the old desk. Any suggestions on how to get some extra cals out while at the desk would be greatly appreciated.

I got my fitbit for Xmas, and just got back to work today. SO, needless to say, I dont have a lot of practice in.

- I made a point to hit our mini-gym and walked the treadmill for 20 minutes.

- took the long way to the restroom, breakroom  ( water refills) , etc.

I also plan on digging out that old exercise ball I have and set that up as my chair at work.

Every little bit helps.  I also have an 8 hour desk job.  I make sure to park as far away from the door as I can.  I get two 15 minute breaks where I speed walk all three buildings of my workplace.  While at my desk I do leg lifts for as long as possible, for as many time as possible (plus noone sees you lifting your legs out straight under your desk!), and the easiest, suck in the abs and hold for a minute, release for a bit and repeat.  All great ways to burn more calories while sitting on your bum.

Well, walking for 15 minutes four times a day is just as good as doing so for an hour straight. So take a break in the middle of the morning and afternoon and walk around for 15 minutes. Park 15 minutes away from your office or walking around the building a few times in before starting or after ending. That leaves lunch free to do whatever you normally do. You should get up and move during that time since setting for more than two hours straight isn't good, but it need not qualify as exercise. 15 minutes of walk spread over an hour isn't really exercise, but 15 minutes of sustained walking is.

Just testing out the fitbit for my clients. But one suggestion I always give to the ones who work at a desk job is to set a reoccuring meeting on the hour on any calendar/email program. The tell me this has really helped them to just get up, walk around the office, go get some water and stretch. Be creative with your time. Talking on the phone, reading long emails or documents doesn't mean you have to be sitting. Hope that helps.

Is the desk at home?  Rig up a treadmill desk.  Or can you work at Fitbit?  I think they offer treadmill desks.  Woman Very Happy

I work from home so I may have an advantage here, but I work 8 to 10 hours a day at a desk.  It is just that 3 to 4 of those hours are at a treadmill desk and I get between 12 and 18k steps during that time.  90%+ of my weekly activity is from this.  If you can swing it, I really suggest a treadmill desk for anyone working a desk job, some companies have been known to bring them into the office as shared items with people given slots of time to use the treadmill desk.  Again not sure if that helps.  The other thing you can do is bring a small set of weights to your desk and every once in a while take a five minute break of standing up and doing some basic curls. Won't be a ton but every calorie counts.

I too work from home behind a desk when I am not at a client site (I am a Sr. Consultant for a consulting firm), so I do get up multiple times throughout the day and get my steps in during those times.  I will walk at lunch, walk to pick up my daughter at school instead of drive, adn after dinner, go for a few mile walks.
