It’s very hard to lose weight (especially a significant amount of it) with exercise alone. You should put most of your focus on your diet, and view exercising as a way to support it. Any form of exercise you can perform safely and recover from is better than no exercise at all. You don’t necessarily need to follow a structured plan with formal exercise. Informal exercise (anything that has you moving instead of being stationary) is great too. For instance, you could listen to podcasts or audio books while walking, instead of watching Netflix on your couch, reading a paper book in an armchair etc. Hitting a few select Fitbit goals (steps, calories, active minutes etc.) makes a great exercise plan, at least in the beginning.

I would like to add that Fitbit Coach might be a great way to start.

I agree with @Dominique that getting the 30 lbs off is more a matter of your diet than your exercise.  In that regard, track your food for a couple of weeks and look for some low hanging fruit to cut back on. For example, when I was trying to lose weight last year, I realized my nightly habit of 2 beers or glasses of wine represented a lot of unnecessary calories.  I adjusted by not drinking on even numbered days (after taking a month off to prove to myself that I could).  The result was to cut out around 1500 calories/week without much thought.  That alone represented close to 1/2 lb of weight loss/week at the time.

Regarding exercise.  Fitbit is a great tool for helping you realize how much you are not moving throughout the day, which in turn shows you opportunities to get “credit” for maybe another 20-30% movement daily just by moving some every hour.  Add to that 30-60 minute of planned exercise/day and you will be well on your way to improved health.

If you are not used to working out/going to the gym, my suggestion is to join group classes such as bodypump or whatever you find interesting (bodypump was just the first thing that came to my mind) in the beggining.
Going to the gym alone when not used to it and out of shape is very time consuming and often people are "cheating", and by that I mean not doing as many reps and sets as necessary for effect, or taking too long breaks between exercises, and therefore not keeping their heart rate up. Of course, people don't do that on purpose, it's just the way we work, and when you are not used to working out, you tend to underestimate what needs to be done to see results.

When working out in a group with music and an instructor, it forces you to do all exercises (and not skip the ones that are boring/difficult) and it forces you to keep the tempo up! It's very hard in the beggining, but I feel it's the best way to start!

I highly recommend it, it worked for me!

And of course, diet is the key! The easiest way to start is just to cut out all the unnecessary stuff like sugars, sodas and such. It is very difficult sticking to a diet plan if it's too drastic, and that's why people give up. Small steps are always best. In the end, the goal is to find a solution that will be long lasting so you don't gain weight again. That's why I'm not a fan of cutting out normal food, like not eating carbs at all. It's very hard to avoid carbs for the rest of your life ;);)

Good luck!
