Did you mean:

I work graveyards. Work out in the morning or afternoon?

My current plan is to work out when I get off work at 5am. But I'm afraid it will mess with my sleep, as I've noticed once the sun comes up, I have a harder time getting to sleep and staying asleep. Also, I've heard that working out and then immediately going to bed (as I would have to) is detrimental to your health.

But working out in the afternoons before I go to work seems like a no-go as well, as I'll be goin during peak hours, will have a hard time getting equipment and I don't want an excessive amount of witnesses to my huffing and puffing (yes, I am extremely body concious at this point in time, and no, it's not something I can 'just get over').

Or maybe I'm just making excuses. I'm good at that, and at convincing myself that it's a 'legitimate' reason. Input? Thoughts? Techniques? Anyone else working the graveyard? Thanks in advance!

I think you will have to play detective and try working out when you first get off work - but I think it will be healthier for you to work out when you first get up and are rested - what do you think?

I'm not sure why working out and then going to bed could be detrimental to your health -- I've never heard that before.

In answer to your question I guess it all boils down to how your body reacts to exercise -- if you feel sleepy afterwards, then working out when you finish your shift is the obvious choice.  If you feel energized, then just before work is good (but then again, I get your point with that being rush hour at the gym).

How about splitting your workouts?  Half in the morning, half before you go to work? That might help get you fitter without impacting your off hours work/sleep schedule too badly.
