January 2021 RESET— Step Challenge and Resolutions

Welcome to 2021. It is a new year; Covid isn’t gone, but vaccines are on the way. And, even though it is cold in the North, and hot in the South, it is healthier to get outside. So let’s start off the year with another monthly challenge.  Go ahead and try out something new. A RESET ,,, a diet or exercise change, less drinking or smoking, going to bed earlier, learn a new skill … But in this case, commit for just a month and see how it goes. You can do anything for a month, and if it still makes sense on January 31, try to make it ordinary come February. Or adapt it a bit.                                                        

   
How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

 

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

 

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

 

Suggested Posting Format    
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

 

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The idea of a monthly picture scavenger hunt started a couple of years ago as a way to get people into the great outside to show off where they live.

 

The theme this month?  It is an old favorite for me; street art or hidden pictures.  Street art is any graffiti you come across and any art designed built into architecture.  Hidden pictures are designs in nature that might be there on purpose (someone carved something into or hung something on a tree) or might be something you see in a natural formation (a shoulder or face in a mountain). It can even be something left over from the holidays ...

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

 

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

I don't know quite what today will be but it will be just over 10K  I was sitting there at 8:15pm wanting nothing more than a shower and a veg evening, but kept finding myself marching in place so I finally put on some shoes and walked to the end of the block twice.  I am now at 9848 and will probably end right around 10K as I don't have much left in me today.  But just going downstairs and getting my water should get me close.

Hi everyone! Catching up on everyone’s posts. Great job and love all the pictures! 

 

I met my goals this week. Did a workout every morning and got a walk in every evening except one. My foot was hurting so I took a night off and iced it and it was better the next day. I think I was just overdoing the walking. Got over 5k steps every day with 3 days over 10k. 

 

Today I’m going to try a bike ride then a walk later. We’re having beautiful weather and I want to take advantage of it! 

 

Here’s a picture from one of my walks the other day. This is “street art” in a 55+ gated community! 😉

So I was riding by this today and thought "Scavenger Hunt" and picked up my bike and leaned it against the sculpture for the pic.  I thought it was a museum or gallery of some sort (there are some winding roads in and out that are gated), but when I looked it up on google maps there was no identifier.  Apparently it is a private residence.  Glad I didn't get chased off by the dogs!  I imagine it was commissioned, but what if the owner saw it somewhere and decided to have it shipped to Maryland?!  There's a good story in there somewhere ...

Saturday was just a weird day.  Couldn't get any oomph.  Saturday night I slept 10 hours (as compared to my normal 6 if I am lucky) 

@Baltoscott  -heh, that sculpture reminds me of the house with the giant black funnel in the front yard of one of the fancy homes in Nashville.  It's just bizarre.

My goals are simple again.   10,000 steps per day, 20 floor, daily yoga, weights, stretching.

 

step days over 10,000 - 18 of 18  high day 17,192   (may have to raise my daily step goals now that I'm recovered.)

floor days over 20     -     8 of 18
