January 2021 RESET— Step Challenge and Resolutions

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

Welcome to 2021. It is a new year; Covid isn’t gone, but vaccines are on the way. And, even though it is cold in the North, and hot in the South, it is healthier to get outside. So let’s start off the year with another monthly challenge.  Go ahead and try out something new. A RESET ,,, a diet or exercise change, less drinking or smoking, going to bed earlier, learn a new skill … But in this case, commit for just a month and see how it goes. You can do anything for a month, and if it still makes sense on January 31, try to make it ordinary come February. Or adapt it a bit.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The idea of a monthly picture scavenger hunt started a couple of years ago as a way to get people into the great outside to show off where they live.

The theme this month?  It is an old favorite for me; street art or hidden pictures.  Street art is any graffiti you come across and any art designed built into architecture.  Hidden pictures are designs in nature that might be there on purpose (someone carved something into or hung something on a tree) or might be something you see in a natural formation (a shoulder or face in a mountain). It can even be something left over from the holidays ...

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

So far, no pics to share this month. We (in Switzerland) are on semi-lockdown and encouraged to stay home as much as possible. I get most steps on my treadmill; but I’ll keep my eyes open when I’m out in my car.

Well it’s been a difficult week. My foot is acting up again making it very difficult to reach my goals. Only had one day over 6500 steps. Did get 4000 or more all the other days. Did do some strength training and a couple of short walking workout videos. Went for an outside walk yesterday and only made 1.5 miles and spent the rest of the day icing the foot. The good news is that I did manage to lose 0.6 pounds last week!

I’m going to try walking some laps in the indoor pool today and see how that goes. Hope everyone has a great week!

My weight went up a bit this week.  Still down for the month, but not much chance I'll hit my goal.

This weekend was brutally cold.  Real-feel temperatures of 5... Yuck!  I got out and did what I could without getting frostbite.  I'm about 60k steps behind where I should be; I know I won't make them all up, but I'm certainly going to try to not be any further behind!  Stay warm!

I've been able to get into the cardio zone a bit more - my legs are my limiter with all the knee/ankle stuff.  i wouldn't mind putting in a minutes in cardio zone goal in for Feb, but it looks like it might be a bit more of a pain to track than I want to deal with especially since I typically walk 2-3 sessions a day.

Technically I didn't get all my steps today, as in Fitbit can't record them if I've left the watch off my wrist ... But I got pretty close even with the missing two hours so it counts! 😀

SNOW!!!!    I worked on campus this morning and walked home at lunch and it is snowing!  And sticking.  Not a very common thing here.   Might make getting the rest of my steps today tricky as it is supposed to turn to freezing rain.   I do snow, but not ice.

Ended up taking a 3rd walk in the snow last night, nothing terribly fast yesterday, footing was weak.  Bad sleep last night so today may be a rest day.  Snow melting fast, right now it is slush out there.  Turns out my new winter walking boots I bought last year when we had no snow are not even the tiniest bit waterproof.  Perhaps I shall use my insomnia to shop.

1/27-10029 steps - yep that little march in place just before bed to get me there.

Ended up with a really long "listen only" zoom meeting which gave me time to clean off the treadmill that has become a giant storage device and then about 20 minutes on the TM during the meeting and again after dinner. TM steps are so boring but they get the job done.   Running a bit late for work this morning and have errands at lunch so will try to get some TM steps in during the day.
