Marathon Training with Shin Splints

I'm training for my second marathon - and I've come down with the worst shin splints I've ever had. I'm running using the same program I did last year, and I've taken extra care to warm up and cool down for my runs. I'm very flat-footed and now I've been to the foot and ankle clinic and have better shoes to try.

My splints prevent me from running correctly; the pain is so intense and I'm finding myself gimping and limping without the ability to just "push through it". I've been off for almost two weeks and tried a run today - now it's worse than ever.

Are there any fitness routines anyone does that wouldn't aggrevate my symptoms? Biking and the elliptical are driving me nuts, even when I'm changing things up and trying to do something different every day. I want to be out and running more than anything, but right now it's not possible and I need some alternatives. Any thoughts/suggestions?

This is going to sound super stupid...

but there's this thing called pool running.

It's basically zero impact on your joints and legs, therefore making it WAAAAY easier on your legs. You'll have to do it for longer than you would a regular run, but for the ease and less pain, it's so worth it.

I feel you on the shin splints though. I've had them twice, and they make you just want to cut your legs off. HORRIBLE! Google it though! It's work a look. Smiley Happy

My doc is making me go to physical therapy for mine. Lots of stretches, different kinds of stretches. I couldnt beleive how tight I was. Now we are working on strengthening ankle and calf muscles. I thought I was strong so it was kind of a surprise but it seems to be helping.

Compression socks did the trick for me.  I run 20-30 miles per week and I was always having issues with shin splints.  I have not had shin splints since I started using them.  2XU and Pro Compression are the brands I have used.
